All About The Hustle

Biola Women’s Basketball presses and breaks its way to a blowout 65-29 victory of Cal State San Bernardino.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball set a new NCAA-era program record for fewest points allowed during Saturday's 65-29 win over Cal State San Bernardino.

The Eagles never allowed the Coyotes to score more than nine points in a quarter and forced CSUSB to have equal numbers of points and turnovers in the contest. Biola had previously limited Westcliff University to 29 points in an exhibition last year and held Upland College to just seven points back in a 62-7 win on December 5, 1964.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team was locked in and ready to run from the jump, collecting five steals in the first period while taking an unchallenged lead five minutes into the game. Both offenses were slow to start out, scoring a combined 10 points in the first five minutes. But Danita Estorga's six first quarter points helped the Eagles hold a four-point lead headed into the second quarter.

From there, Jazz Benn and Jelissa Puckett started to form a one-two combo that would basically take over the rest of the game. Benn sank her only three-pointer of the second quarter and went 4-for-5 from the field to score nine first-half points on the way to a game-high 21. Puckett did most of the little things to set up the scoring, collecting two assists and two steals in the quarter as Biola carried a nine-point lead into halftime.

The senior point guard finished with a stat-stuff box score of six points, eight assists and five steals to go along with zero fouls and just two turnovers.

Biola then exploded for 40 second-half points while limiting the Coyotes to 13 over the same span. And while Benn and Estorga getting their points to finish as the Eagles' two leading scorers, Biola really dominated the game with hustle and a team-first mentality that created nine second-half steals and four blocks on the way to the blowout.

The home team dished out 10 assists, five coming from Puckett, and had 13 points off the bench in the fourth quarter alone to put the game away. Kayla Macedo and Jordan Rabe each scored their first points of the season while seemingly everything started to fall through the net for Biola. And Rabe's three-pointer with 2:10 to go was the first field goal of her collegiate career.

"The team is really committing to playing together, and competing well for 40 minutes at both ends of the court. It is great to see them enjoy the encouragement of a well-played game," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "They work really hard to prepare for these games, so any success they have is well-earned. We have a group of high-quality young women who are committed in the classroom, and on the court. I am very thankful for each player we have on our team."

The Eagles will carry their two-game winning streak into an exhibition at NCAA DI San Diego next Tuesday. Tipoff at the Jenny Craig Pavilion is scheduled for 6 p.m.
