Eagles Enjoying The Islands

Biola Women’s Golf is tied for first place after the first 18 holes of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate.

ROUND ONE RESULTS

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii --- Head Coach Jane Carr made sure Biola Women's Golf had plenty of time to acclimate to the playing conditions on the Big Island and that planning paid dividends on Monday at the Dennis Rose Inter Collegiate.

The Biola Eagles finished the first round in a tie with Western Washington atop a tightly packed top-five. The Eagles team score of 303 ties their best first-round mark of the season thus far and comes on the backs on two top-10 starts scores of 80 or better for the entire team.

NCAA West Region participants make up the majority of the 10-team field at the Intercollegiate. On top of having a slim lead over the other eight teams at the tournament, the Eagles also find themselves 10 strokes ahead of PacWest peer Hawaii Hilo and 26 shots above Hawaii Pacific after the first day of play.

Sami Penor (71) and Jules Loibl (74) both had top-10 starts on the par-70, 6002 yard Waikoloa Beach Course. Penor recorded three birdies on the day and really set herself up for success with seven-straight par puts and a birdie to wrap up the front-nine and start hole 10 at even-par. Loibl also had a strong front-nine, shooting a 36 after going one-under on holes five through nine. She birdied the par-five seven for her lone under-par hole of the day and will start play Tuesday in seventh place.

Penor has sole possession of second place, just one shot behind the overall leader Kaelyn Uchida (70).

Sophia Karnazes put herself in the top-25 of the 55-player field after shooting a 78 on Monday, 38 on the front nine and 40 on the back. Alexis Gopfert and Marcel Manalo both walked off the course with scores of 80, placing themselves two strokes behind Karnazes and in the top-30.

Gopfert started the day with a birdie on the first holes and took 40 strokes on both halves of the course. Manalo may be poised for a big jump up the leaderboard at some point this tournament after she matched Loibl with a 36 on the front-nine.

The Eagles will return to the Beach Course on Tuesday for the second round.
