Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Basketball Is Back!

The entire women’s basketball roster gets playing time in the Eagles first exhibition of the year.

MALIBU, Calif. --- With the first countable games just 11 days away, Biola Women's Basketball opened its 2019-20 season on Tuesday with an exhibition at NCAA DI Pepperdine.

Head Coach Alan Namkura used the opportunity to give live-game experience to his entire roster by rotating players from the outset and the Eagles eventually found a rhythm to a strong second half in the 77-49 loss. But a 23-5 advantage after the first quarter put the Waves in the driver's seat to earn a non-countable victory in their home gym.

Senior Jelissa Puckett paced the Eagles with 11 points while freshman Stephanie Lee got eight off the bench. Biola equaled Pepperdine's scoring output in the second half with 31 points, thanks it part to 16 points in the paint during the second half compared to eight over the first 20 minutes.

"It was good to get out there to compete against a talented, experienced, outstanding Pepperdine team. It was a test for us, and we learned a lot," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "With the high character, unity, and teachable spirit of this team, I am confident that we will start to apply the lessons we learned right away."

As she did so many times in the 2018-19 season, Mikayla Greens led the Eagles in rebounds with seven in 19 minutes of action. Madison Chang picked up three defensive boards in her first 18 minutes against collegiate competition while Jaden Randall pulled down two rebounds on the offensive glass.

The aforementioned Lee drained two of Biola's four three-pointers in the game and match sophomore guard Aysia Johnson for the Eagles' best shooting percentage on Tuesday (60 percent).

The Eagles ended the game shooting 35 percent and had 30 points off the bench. They'll head to Cal State Fullerton in three days time to take on the Titans in another exhibition. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
