Biola Competes With PacWest Peers

Biola Women’s Golf gets its first look at a number of PacWest teams during Monday’s first round at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- Biola Women's Golf opened up its first team competition in three weeks on Monday morning, playing the first round of the Sonoma State Fall Invitational in what started as foggy and cold conditions.

As the clouds cleared as the day progressed, Head Coach Jane Carr's group also became a bit more acquainted with several PacWest schools the Eagles were seeing for the first time this season. Biola was one of five PacWest teams in the 13-team field at the Foxtail Golf Club for the Invite and settled in seventh place after the first 18 holes.

With a team score of 314, the Eagles built a big lead over Dominican (+42) after the first round and placed themselves within seven shots of Holy Names (307) and Point Loma (311). Last year's PacWest Tournament Champion Academy of Art also leads this tournament with a one-round team score of 297.

All four of Biola's counting scores were clustered together in the top-half of the individual leaderboard. Upperclassmen Alexis Gopfert and Jules Loibl both shot 78 (+6) to set the pace for the Eagles on day one. And that duo was followed immediately by Sami Penor and Sophia Karnazes with matching scores of 79.

The sub-80 score for Loibl and Gopfert continues a nice streak for both women that stretch back to last year's PacWest Championships. Loibl has now finished six-straight rounds with scores below 80 dating back to her sixth-place finish at the 2019 conference championships. Gopfert isn't far off of Loibl's rate with four sub-80 scores in her last 80 rounds dating back to her top-10 finish at the same tournament.

All five Eagles recorded a birdie during their first playthrough on Monday, with Gopfert and Penor shooting the best front and back nines, respectively.

Gopfert started the round on 15 and used a birdie on the par-four 11 and finished the back nine with a score of 37 after concluding the playthrough with back-to-back par scores. Penor's 37 came on the front nine after saving par on the par-five one, the par-four two and the 166-yard three. The sophomore was even on the four par-three holes at Foxtail Golf Club after getting her birdie on hole six.

Loibl and Marcel Manalo also had a good front nine with scores of 38. Manalo (81) was the only Eagle to sink two birdies in the first round, as she was in the red on holes six and nine.

Biola will continue play at the Invitational on Tuesday morning.
