Eagles Prove They Can COPE

Biola gets a massive performance from Abigail Copeland, bounces back after L.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Playing back-to-back nights against top-4 conference teams with start times at 10 p.m. on your internal clock sure is hard. Biola Volleyball did not make it look that way on Thursday though, playing some tremendous volleyball en route to a 3-1 win (23-25; 25-21; 25-17; 25-22) over Hawaii Pacific.

Biola tied its season-high with 17 blocks in the match, leading HPU in that category 17-9. The Eagles had eight blocks alone in the second set, which proved to be the turning point of the match after Biola couldn't wrap its hands around a set one win.

Freshman Abigail Copeland tallied a career-best 11 blocks to lead that effort. She was also stellar on the offensive end, hitting .600 for the match to contribute seven kills on 10 swings.

"Copeland was a blocking machine. She played well, patrolling the net and giving us a lot of offensive balance," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "Our middles did a really good job. Marissa Price was also important tonight. She came in and got things ironed out and did great."

The blocking, serving and incredible night from Sami Hover were the big differentiators between the two teams in this one. The Eagles played one of their cleanest matches of the season with 19 fewer errors than HPU.

Biola had eight service aces in the match, including a season-best three from Marissa Price. Price also had one of her best performances, if not the best, of her freshman season. She led the Eagles in aces (3) and assists (20) while tacking on eight digs for good measure. Price had back-to-back aces early in the second set to help BU get out to an 11-4 lead. That lead would be paramount to the eventual positive result in this one.

Both teams ended the night with 61 digs over the four sets. Hover led all players with 24. She also had two service aces to help the cause. It's her 21st time topping 20 digs in a match.

HPU had a good chance to flip the match on its head late in the second set. The Sharks charged hard and brought things back to tied up as late as the 20-20 mark. But, Biola got three-straight blocks to make it 23-20 and cruised to the 25-21 finish from there.

Set three did not have a similar storyline, thanks in large part to the Eagles' killer B's Becca Branch and Bekah Roth. The pair combined for seven kills in the third game, with most coming after the 15-point mark, to help Biola to a 25-17 third-game win and 2-1 advantage in the match.

Roth ended up leading the Biola attack for the second time in as many nights. She had 13 kills. Branch was second in that area with 11. Both players hit above .250 to help Biola to a .179 team clip for the match.

The fourth set was close enough to have us looking up both teams' record in five-setters when the score was 18-14 in favor of HPU, but another strong finish brought the Eagles to victory lane.

A six-point run right after that 18-14 score line and a Seltzer timeout is what made all the difference in the last set. Two kills from Branch and a kill and solo block from Copeland drove that six-point run.

The match finished off with back-to-back kills by Reagan Tjepkema who had a great night of her own that's not to be lost in the shuffle. The freshman middle had nine kills on a .375 clip and added six blocks and three digs to help the cause.

The win brings Biola back to an even 8-8 on the year and makes it a more comfortable 5-3 in PacWest Conference play. The Sharks fall to 10-6 (6-2 PacWest).

Up next for BU is the conclusion to its Hawaiian getaway. The Eagles face Hawaii Hilo (11-5, 6-2 PacWest) at 10 p.m. PT this Saturday. The Vulcans are a tough test, having just handed Concordia Irvine a 3-0 loss on Thursday night.
