Game Recap: Volleyball |

Road Trip Trip Up

Biola's road trip comes to a sour close with 3-1 loss at Hilo.

HILO, Hawaii --- Biola Volleyball took advantage of a slow start from Hawaii Hilo's star player to steal a 25-23 win in set one, but after that the hosts figured things out to spoil the Eagles' road trip finale with a 3-1 win (25-23; 21-25; 19-25; 9-25).

The fourth set was the toughest sledding for the Eagles, who gave up an 11-point run to the Vulcans right in the middle and ultimately got held to single digits for the first time this year. The Vulcans hit over .500 in the final frame, which was a far cry from the .025 mark Biola held them to in the first set.

The biggest difference was the awakening of Hilo's Bria Beale. The Division I transfer, All-PacWest first-teamer and reigning PacWest Player of the Week was held to just .000 with three kills in the first game. But, by the end of the match she had 18 kills, a .400 mark, 12 digs and a handful of aces to carry the Vulcans past BU.

Bekah Roth spurred Biola to its 25-23 game one win with five kills and a .625 clip. Hilo's blockers and defense keyed in on her from sets two through four and allowed her just four more kills through the remainder of the match.

As a team, Biola saw its offensive production go down with each set that passed until ultimately managing just four kills in the final set. The communication on the floor seemed the biggest issue at that point with a number of sets not being converted to attacks.

Biola was tied as late as 13-13 in set two and was still within one as late as 19-17, which was making a 2-0 advantage in the match seem possible. Unfortunately, Hilo was able to wrap up the second game with a late run and then cruised pretty well through sets three and four to wrap up the match.

The Eagles' had a 6-1 advantage in blocks after the second set. Using the block as a major weapon in slowing down the Hilo offense. That weapon disappeared altogether as the match wrapped near its conclusion as the Eagles had zero blocks in games three and four.

Roth ended the night as the leading hitter for BU with nine kills. Becca Branch was second with six kills on a night where Biola was led in that category 49-37.

Sami Hover had 14 digs to lead the Eagles' effort in that category. Biola ability to dig up attacks and pass well was a strong suit for most of the night, leading to long rallies and a lot of extra work from the setters and attackers on both sides.

The two teams combined for 264 attacks and 117 digs on the night.

The loss drops Biola to 8-9  (5-4 PacWest). The Vulcans win their seventh in a row to improve to 12-5 (6-2 PacWest). Biola finally gets to come back to Chase Gym for some home cooking this coming week. They host Academy of Art on Friday, October 18 and turn right around to host Holy Names on the 19th. Biola got wins over both teams during the first week of conference play.
