Game Recap: Volleyball |

Reedy Got Greedy

Chaminade's Rachel Reedy has a career night to help 'Swords beat Biola in four.

HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Two games were as close as can be and two were just about the opposite as Biola fought hard but came up short in four sets (23-25; 15-25; 25-21; 16-25) at undefeated Chaminade on Wednesday night.

The Eagles ran up against a phenomenal individual performance from Chaminade's Rachel Reedy. Reedy had a career-high 20 kills on a .405 clip to make things tough on the Biola defense all night long.

The first set saw the score tied 19 times and the lead change hands more than 10 times before the host managed to take the narrow two-point win. Biola had won three-consecutive points, all on Chaminade errors, to tie the opening game at 23-23 before CUH locked things down.

Game two was the opposite from game one, seeing Chaminade lead from start to finish. Biola hit a bit better in set two than it had in set one, but BU's number of attacks and kills went way down. Service errors and ball-handling errors stacked up to counter the positive of five second-set blocks and Biola saw itself go down 0-2.

Not wanting to see the first night of its Hawaii work trip end so quickly Biola rallied in game three, stalling the host's attempt at victory for just a little bit longer. Bekah Roth had three kills and a block in that set, helping lead BU to the 25-21 win.

The Eagles and Silverswords traded blows for the majority of that third set, with neither team leading by more than one point until Chaminade managed to pull ahead 14-12. That was the same point that a team had its first two-point lead in the first set, too, except then it was Biola going ahead 14-12.

Biola immediately came back and tied things up at 14-14 and then saw things go back-and-forth again until it was 16 all. Finally there was a little let-up as Biola managed four wins in a row to become the first team to 20 in that third game. Back-to-back blocks from Biola started that run, seeing Saramasina Docktor, Roth, Reagan Tjepkema and Sabrina Winslow all get in on the action.

The Eagles would withstand a late CUH push in the third by winning the final three rallies and locking up their lone set win on the night. Abby Brewster had two kills before Becca Branch finished it off to extend the match into a fourth game.

Biola held close in the early stages of game four, but Chaminade's many offensive weapons took over to see the host school hit .406 with 16 kills as it worked its way to its eighth-consecutive PacWest Conference win to begin the season.

Roth led Biola's offense with 12 kills, one off her season-high. She hit .296 while doing it, which was second only to Tjepkema's .455 mark. The Eagles' standout freshman was limited to just 11 swings on Wednesday night.

Abby Brewster was second on the team with six kills. Had this match gone five the redshirt freshman had an outside chance at a triple-double. She added 10 assists and 12 digs to her six kills.

Biola had another strong blocking night, getting 10 blocks on the stat sheet. It's the fourth time in the last five matches that BU has had double-digit blocks. They only hit that mark two times in the first 10 matches of 2019.

The Eagles' offense just couldn't keep up with Chaminade's 63 kills tonight. BU was -23 in that category with just 40 kills of its own and only one player higher than seven kills. Chaminade, conversely, had five players with eight or more kills, including the above mentioned Reedy (20) and All-PacWest athlete Emma Tecklenburg who had 14.

The loss drops Biola back under .500 at 7-8 overall. It's still a positive winning percentage in conference play though at 4-3. Chaminade, which is currently ranked just outside the top-30 in NCAA Division II improved to 14-2 (8-0 PacWest).

It's a quick turnaround for Seltzer's squad as they face Hawaii Pacific at 10 p.m. PT on Thursday Oct. 10.
