Biola Puts Heat on Sunbirds

Excellent second half defense from Biola brought the Eagles within one make of tying Fresno Pacific in the closing seconds.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles found a few sorely needed three-pointers in the second half and earned themselves two chances to tie the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds in the last 10 seconds before FPU held on for the victory.

The Eagles limited the visiting Sunbirds to just six field goals in the final 20 minutes and shut them out for the first three and a half minutes of the quarter to make the 60-57 game feel just as close and the score indicated. But the Eagles fall to 8-10, 6-6 PacWest while Fresno Pacific improve to 13-8, 9-4 PacWest after avoiding a collapse.

"Fresno Pacific is playing very well, and we competed well from start to finish. We worked hard on the defensive end and worked for good looks on the offensive end," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "When we were behind late in the game we hung together, rallied by playing tough defense, and earned a good look to tie the game at the end."

The first half was a tale of two alternate playing styles in terms of scoring. The Sunbirds had three women score in double-figures in the first two quarters and had starters account for 38 of their 40 points. On the other side, Biola's highest scorer had just six points but eight women etched their names in the scoring column.

The Eagles actually equaled the Sunbirds' number of first-half fields goals with 13. But Fresno Pacific's eight-to-one advantage in three-point makes resulted in the Sunbirds' 40-32 lead at halftime and 10-point advantage shortly after the start of the third quarter.

Two three-pointers during the third quarter, including one just before the buzzer sounded, helped the Eagles stick around as they headed into the final 10 minutes. The three and a half minute drought from FPU did help Biola dig in and find a great rhythm on defense that forced Fresno Pacific to take desperation shots at the end of the shot clock. But the Eagles only scored two points of their own over that same span and were forced to use the big shots they got later just to bring the score closer.

As the clock ticked down to two minutes remaining, Tatum Brimley drained back-to-back threes for the Eagles to make it a three-point game. Brimley finished with a team-high 15 points and became Biola's second double-figure scorer after Danita Estorga. But three-point attempts from both Brimley and Estorga were turned away by the rim in the closing seconds and allowed Fresno Pacific to win despite missing all its free throws and shots over the final 1:39.

Biola will hit the road again next week when the Eagles travel to Hawaii to begin their three-game trip. Biola begins the trip by taking on Chaminade on Jan. 31 at 8:30 p.m. (PT).
