Big Performances Key Hawaii Win

Led by Brenna Khaw’s career-high 21 points, the Biola Eagles scored inside and out on Thursday to defeat Chaminade.

HONOLULU --- The Eagles turned a close game into a comfortable victory late in the fourth quarter on Thursday as they begun their three-game Hawaii road trip with a 67-57 win over Chaminade.

After the team was just 1-for-11 from beyond the arc in the first half, Brenna Khaw and her teammates went shot 6-of-10 from three in the second half and made 12 more free throws than the Silverswords to hold off their late charge. Khaw led the Eagles with nine rebounds, four steals and set a new career-high with 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half.

"We knew playing Chaminade was going to be a test from start to finish," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "They are a talented young team. We competed on the defensive end very well for 40 minutes, and played with good offensive poise at the end to seal the game".

The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the road this season and 7-6 in PacWest play while Chaminade loses its second game of the week at home and fall to 4-13, 3-11 PacWest. The Silverswords' leading scorer, Destiny Castro, still led her team with 17 points on Tuesday. But Biola prevented the rest of her teammates from also scoring in double figures while holding Chaminade to under 60 points.

In contrast, the three women besides Khaw also scored in double figures for the Eagles and it was the forwards who carried most of the weight in the first half. Danita Estorga earned herself a lot of playing time in the game with 10 first-half points after coming off the bench. Jazz Benn also added seven points of her own in the first 20 minutes to help Biola score 20 points in the paint over that span.

The points in the paint and the victory in the rebounding battle for Biola indicate how successful the Eagles were in using their height to take command of the game. Despite the fact that Chaminade pulled within one point in the second half, the Eagles doubled the Silverswords' points in the paint and out-rebounded Chaminade by right while pulling down 13 offensive boards.

While the forwards did their work down low, Biola's starting guards turned up the heat and combined for 39 second-half points. While Khaw knocked down four three-pointers, Tatum Brimley contributed three field goals and six free throws in the final 20 minutes to reach her second-highest point total of the season (17).

The Eagles will look to improve their free throw shooting in advance of Saturday's game against Hawaii Pacific, as they missed nine of their 21 attempts at the charity stripe. But Head Coach Nakamura's group more than made up for it with a number of clutch steals and offensive rebounds in the final two minutes that kept Chaminade from finding traction.

Tip-off on Saturday against Hawaii Pacific is scheduled for 3 p.m. Pacific Time.
