Headed Home Riding High

The Biola Eagles earned a 21-point victory over Holy Names on Saturday, converting nearly every free throw attempt and playing great defense.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles won a game in Tobin Gymnasium for the second time this week on Saturday and finished their eight-day road trip to the Bay Area with an impressive 3-1 record.

After defeating Academy of Art on the same court by 20-plus points the previous Monday, the Eagles used great free-throw shooting and shutdown defense to down the Holy Names Hawks 67-46. The win lifts Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group back to .500 at 8-8 and keeps them in firm control of fourth place in the PacWest with a 6-4 conference record.

The Hawks kept things close in the first quarter as both teams took some time to get into the flow of their offense. After holding a small 7-4 lead after five minutes, the Eagle took a 14-13 advantage into the second quarter after Tatum Brimley made all four of her team's free throw attempts in the first 10 minutes.

Biola would go on to start the game 8-for-8 at the charity stripe and 9-of-10 in a first half during which Holy Names committed 17 fouls. Those free throws helped the Eagles pull away in the second quarter as they limited the home team to seven points on 2-of-12 shooting. Both Brimley and Jazz Benn finished the first half with eight points while Sara Dougan and Jessica Shill added seven points from the post in the second quarter on four free throws and a three-pointer, respectively.

Holy Names would rebound from its 11-point deficit and 5-of-26 shooting in the first half with 21 points in the third period, but a balanced attack led by Brenna Khaw's five points helped Biola keep pace with its opponent's scoring and maintained a 48-41 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Over that span, Benn, Brimley and Khaw each eclipsed the double-digit scoring threshold while Holy Names endured another period in which it managed two field goals. Freshman Abigail Laberge was a perfect 3-for-3 during the fourth quarter to lead her team with six points in the final period, tying her with Danita Estorga for a team-high seven points as a substitute on Saturday.

The Eagles will have a full week to prepare for their next game. Biola heads to Azusa Pacific next Saturday for a Cornerstone Cup rematch at 5:30 p.m.
