Biola Proves To Be Superior Eagle

BU beats CU in a matchup of longtime rivals.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Old foes and sometimes bitter rivals went toe-to-toe once again at Chase Gym on Wednesday night, and Biola got the result it needed to put two games back between it and Concordia in the conference standings.

The good Eagles beat the bad Eagles in three sets (26-24, 25-11, 25-19) to extend their winning streak against fowl to 31-straight matches.

"I appreciate Concordia's competitiveness tonight. I thought they came in and played real hard," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "They've got some young talent that's going to be very, very good. It's tough when it's a little Eagle on Eagle crime."

The first set was the one to watch in this contest as Concordia erased a Biola lead that was as large as 11-4 and ended up even taking a lead late in the frame at 23-22. CUI won eight out of 11 points from that 11-4 mark to pull back within two and then managed another small run to force the issue late.

Fortunately for Biola, it found its own groove when it mattered most in the match's opening stanza. A block from Sierra Bauder and Brinley Beresford gave Biola the lead back at 24-23, and then after a CUI block the Eagles got a kill by Christina DenBoer and a bad attack from the visitors to clinch that set 26-24.

"They had a legitimate chance to take that game one and really make this match look a little bit different," said Seltzer.

DenBoer would end as Biola's leading attacker for the match, racking up 10 kills and hitting .310. She was playing against her cousin Julia in this match. The relative ended up with a similar stat line with seven kills, a .182 clip and four digs.

The second set was a big blowout in favor of Biola as Concordia just could not find their stride, only landing five kills, while hitting the ball out eight times.

The third and final set had a bit more intrigue, but Biola was able to win seven of the last eight points to really make it feel like a big win. All but one of those seven points came from Biola kills, two by Brinley Beresford and one each from Bekah Roth, DenBoer, Sierra Bauder and Karly Dantuma.

Dantuma was the Eagles' second-leading attacker with nine kills on a season-high .727 hitting percentage. Sabrina Winslow had a great match too with eight kills, two aces and five digs.

"I thought Sabrina played well. She played well in the back row, passed well and served well. I thought she did a very good job."

Biola ended with six aces and seven blocks and led Concordia in all statistical categories, including a steep 43-27 advantage in digs.

Sami Hover had another one of those unbelievable matches where she ran all around the floor making acrobatic pick-ups to end with a team-high 20 digs.

"Sami was literally a "Hover vacuum cleaner" and vacuumed up everything in the back row," said Seltzer.

Biola improves to 10-5 (6-2 PacWest) with the victory. Concordia falls to 5-11 (4-4 PacWest) with the loss. The Eagles hit the road for a quick one-match road trip at Fresno Pacific this Friday. They then return home for a big Cornerstone Cup matchup with Azusa Pacific next week on Wednesday. Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace will be here giving away free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches to the first 250 fans.
