This One's For The 'Birds

Biola beats the Sunbirds for the second time this season to improve to a sparkling 7-2 in conference.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball had its first repeat PacWest opponent of the season on Friday night, and thanks to some serious work by Sierra Bauder and Sabrina Winslow, the Eagles were able to repeat the result and get a win over Fresno Pacific.

The Eagles won the first set with relative ease, dropped set two after blowing a big lead, but then bounced back in the third and fourth to win, 3-1 (25-16; 22-25; 25-18; 25-17).

"Every win is a good win. We will take it," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "Sabrina and Sierra did a really good job coming out. They took on a lot of the load and did great."

Set one was all Biola as the Eagles hit .154 with 11 kills and their opponents hit -.128 with 13 attack errors.

Winslow took advantage of playing in front of her own home town crowd to lead the team effort with four kills in the opening frame. It was her fourth kill that locked down the set win at 25-16.

The Eagles also had four blocks in that solid start to the night at the net. Biola had a stretch when it won 10 points in 11 tries to extend from a 4-3 lead to a 14-4 advantage.

Fresno Pacific found a way to turn around their ineffective attack midway through the second set. After trailing by as much as nine (14-5), the Sunbirds wer able to come from behind and win 20 of the last 29 rallies to take a shocking 25-22 set two win.

Carley Bock was the conductor of the FPU momentum train, landing seven kills in the second set after being held without a single one in the first. Karly Dantuma had four of her own in the second set to lead Biola's effort in that frame.

Biola bounced back to form offensively and defensively in the third set, recording a then-match-best .298 hitting percentage while forcing it's opponents to nine attack errors and a hitting clip of under .100 (.088).

Winslow broke past the double-digit kill mark in the middle of that third set and once again had the set-winning kill to lift BU to the 25-18 victory. She had five kills in the third set.

Biola had to battle from behind at the beginning of that third set, not taking their first lead until the 8-7 mark and also had to withstand a late run from the Sunbirds to claim the crucial 2-1 lead in the match.

The Eagles' best offensive set by far came in the fourth and clinching game. Bauder spearheaded an attack that set match-highs in kills (16) and hitting percentage (.448) en route to locking down the match.

Bauder recorded six of her 13 kills for the night in the final set. She would end second only to Winslow (15) in terms of kills and led the team with a .684 hitting percentage. The senior middle blocker increased her conference lead in that category as she's now hitting .463 for the season. She's now hit over .600 in a match SIX times this year.

Bauder and Bekah Roth both tied for the team-lead with six blocks on Friday. The Eagles had 12 total blocks, which is their best mark in a match since it recorded 13 against Fresno Pacific in November of 2017.

"We blocked very, very well tonight," said Seltzer. "Even at times we didn't block we were touching the ball so we were picking up easy balls behind it. I am just happy we defended and blocked well."

The victory helps Biola improve to 11-5 (7-2 PacWest). They've now won six of their last seven conference matches and have a 20-4 set record in that span.

Next up for Biola is its biggest test yet. This coming Wednesday (Oct. 3) the Eagles host Azusa Pacific. The Cougars come in leading the conference with a 12-4 (8-0 PacWest) record. APU plays another match this Saturday, which means they could come into Chase Gym on Wednesday with as much as a two-game lead in the conference standings.

The first 250 people in attendance on Wednesday will receive free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, courtesy Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace.
