GOODYEAR, Ariz. --- Biola Women's Golf set new benchmarks for first-round scores on Monday, shooting a program-best 302 in the first 18 holes at the Western New Mexico Fall Invitational while freshman Sami Penor tied the best individual score for an Eagles in a round of any kind with her 71 (-1).

The Eagles clipped their first-round score from last year's NCCAA West Region Championship at the same time Penor tied Jennifer Yoo's and Ava Lourenco's round-scores from tournaments in 2007 and 2012, respectively.

Penor started the day two-under after her front nine when she birdied 13 and 14 before finishing the first round in a tie for first on the individual leaderboard. Penor never fell out of the top-five on Monday and will begin play Tuesday in a tie with three other women for first place.

While Penor led the way, her teammates had good days of their own to help the Eagles come in fifth in the 19-team field after day one with a team score of 302. That results tops the program's previous first-round best by six strokes and improves on the Eagles' first round from last year's WNMU Fall Invite by 11 strokes.

Junior Tori Roeske followed close behind Penor with a score of 75 for a top-20 placement while Jules Loibl and and Alexis Gopfert both carded 78's to push the Eagles to grab the accomplishment for Head Coach Jane Carr's group. And they did it by playing clean golf for the majority of the round. Each of Biola's top four scorers recorded at least two birdies and made par on nine other holes.

Gopfert, Loibl and Roeske all played the Golf Course of Estrella in last year's WNMU Fall Invite, so one has to believe that the Eagles' prior experience on the course helped them Monday and will hopefully facilitate a strong finish on Tuesday.
