Eagles Battle Back In Sweep

A large third-set deficit was nothing to hold back BU from its Saturday 3-0 win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball secured a happily ever after for its week of hosting PacWest Conference Hawaiian counterparts by defeating the Hawaii Pacific Sharks in three sets (25-16; 25-12; 25-20).

Biola stormed out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set and never had any issue in route to the win in the opening game, but the Eagles had to battle from behind in both the second and third sets in order to secure the eventual sweep.

The third set was an especially gritty effort, with the Eagles turning an 11-5 HPU lead into a tie with six consecutive points while sophomore setter Vanessa Garcia was serving. Then the Eagles managed to win eight of the next 10 points too in order to open up a 19-13 lead in the decisive frame. Garcia had eight assists, two aces and even a kill as she powered Biola through that final set.

For the night, the sophomore had 19 assists, which is her new season-best among three-set matches. She also had a season-high four service aces, while the Eagles aced HPU seven times.

"Vanessa was solid all the way around," said senior right side Karly Dantuma. "I think the play in the game that really stood out was she dished one out to Tina and smacked it down. Then she set into the middle and smacked it down. Then she set me, so it was just like all-around  fantastic. Then she got a block, so it was just unreal! I'm very proud of her.

Biola's back row was another point of strength throughout the night as the Eagles held HPU to just a .085 hitting percentage and only 25 kills. Sami Hover led the effort with 14 digs, while Christina DenBoer chipped in nine and Garcia added to her stat line with eight.

"We executed well, we served well and we passed very well. We also limited the damage from their outsides," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I thought Vanessa played very well. I think Karly did a better job. Everybody did a good job. In order for us to be successful, everybody has to do their thing."

Dantuma led Biola's potent attack with a new season-high of 15 kills. She's the second Eagle this season to eclipse the 15-kill mark in just three sets. It's over double her season average for kills-per-set.

"I think a goal going into this game was confidence," said Dantuma. "The way our season has been going it's been up and down but the reality is, we are a good team. I think that in that last game we really honed in on that and realized that we could do it and so we did."

The win gets Biola back on track after their heartbreaking loss to Hawaii Hilo on Thursday night. BU improves to 9-5 (5-2 PacWest) this season and will host Concordia Irvine (4-10, 3-3 PacWest) on Wednesday. The other Eagles are surging right now following their five-set win over Chaminade on Saturday night in Irvine.
