Dantuma Gets 1,000th In Classic

Biola suffered a 3-2 loss, but a fantastic match was played inside Chase Gym Thursday night.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There were four distinct awesome moments in Biola Volleyball's five-setter with Hawaii Hilo on Thursday night in Chase Gym. The first was Karly Dantuma's 1,000th career kill in the second set, then the Eagles' dominant set two and set four victories and finally Biola's defending three match points in the decisive fifth set before ultimately falling, 18-16.

Hawaii Hilo improved to 2-1 on their road trip through So. Cal and passed Biola in the conference standings with the Eagles' unfortunate 3-2 (20-25; 25-12; 17-25; 25-19; 16-18) loss.

Dantuma's fourth kill of what would be 14 on the evening was the 1,000th in her time at Biola. She becomes just the 15th in program history to hit that mark. The senior was one of the leaders to step up on this night as she, Sierra Bauder (15) and Christina DenBoer (14) led the team in kills. The top-3 attackers on the other side, coincidentally, had matching totals.

There was a whole lot that was similar between the two sides if you take a brief glance at the box score with neither team holding a significant lead in any one stat category. The game essentially played out to the matchup on paper as the two teams had almost identical average-per-set stat lines for the season coming into the match.

So, after some up-and-down big wins in sets one through four everything came down to the critical fifth frame. Biola went behind early but used a string of five out of seven points (punctuated by a pair of DenBoer kills) to take an 8-7 lead into the side switch.

Both teams then traded short runs until Biola pulled ahead 13-11 and seemed poised to pull off a great comeback in front of a loud home crowd.

However, the Vulcans capitalized on the energy brought by their large traveling contingent and won the next three points to flip the scoreline to 14-13 and have their first match point.

Then Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team dug deep and worked out of three consecutive match point opportunities thanks to a pair of kills from Bauder and one more from DenBoer and suddenly the match sat at 16-16 with everybody on the edge of their seat.

Back-to-back kills from UHH's leading hitter Alexandria Parisian sealed the match win for the visitors and punched Biola fans in the gut.

DenBoer ended the match with her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and an astounding 18 digs, a new career-high. Brinley Beresford had a team-high 28 assists and paired it with eight kills and a late block. Vanessa Garcia was not too far behind in the assist count with 26 and channeled her inner Beresford with a season-best three kills. The sophomore narrowly missed a double-double of her own with nine digs.

Kaitlin O'Brien was a source of stability for much of the night in serve-receive and finished second-best dig total of the season (12).

At the end of the night there's a whole lot to be happy about, despite one more loss being added to the team's overall and conference record. The Eagles fall to 8-5 (4-2 PacWest), while the Vulcans rise up to 8-3 (4-1 PacWest).

Biola closes out its really busy week with a match against Hawaii Pacific (3-9, 2-4 PacWest) at home on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
