Point Loma is coming off a very similar week to Biola, the timing of things was just a bit different. The Sea Lions also faced Fort Hays State and scored a goal against the Tigers then defeated Northwest Nazarene 3-2 when they played the Nighthawks on Saturday. Point Loma's goals just game a bit later against those opponents then the ones Biola scored, so the Sea Lions defeated Fort Hays State after scoring in the 89th minute and clipped NNU after scoring in the second overtime. This will be the first road game of the season for PLNU and will likely be an important match for keeper Wiktor Lasota. Lasota was named the PacWest Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year but has allowed four goals in off and on action this season and has posted just one shutout.

Concordia has had a difficult time scoring in its first five matches of the season, having scored just one goal across its four losses. CUI will play Fresno Pacific (3-0-1) before hosting the Eagles on Saturday, but are coming off a 4-0 loss to a Cal State San Bernardino team Biola shutout 1-0 on Sept. 8. In its last three matches, CUI has played with fire by surrendering a goal in the first 17 minutes of each contest and has had difficulty putting shots on frame. The Eagles have averaged just three shots-on-goal over that span.

ABOUT LAST WEEK:
The Eagles had a measure of success last week and showed continued growth as they try to peak for conference play upcoming next Thursday. After two defensive miscues led to goals on Thursday against Northwest Nazrene, the Eagles backline locked down for 110 minutes against a ranked opponent in No. 18 Fort Hays State and limited the Tigers to just three shots-on-goal. Four student-athletes found the back on the net for Head Coach Todd Elkins' team last week and the Eagles did a particularly good job of getting forward Leo Thompson into the early flow of Thursday's match. That helped them play downhill against the Nighthawks and made it easier to overcome the two goals they surrendered.

HOPING FOR REVENGE:
The Eagles figure to have an extra dose of motivation to win this week given the recent history they have with these two opponents. Biola went into overtime with both Point Loma and Concordia last year but were unable to come up with a victory in either occasion despite a mountain of hard work. The Eagles scored two goals against Point Loma and held a 2-1 lead with six minutes remaining in regulation before PLNU pulled the game out in overtime. And they also managed six shots-on-goal against Concordia in a physical 0-0 tie in Irvine last season. Despite those results, the Eagles have a 24-11-2 all-time record against Point Loma and are 20-14-4 against Concordia with the last two matches going down as ties.


HOME SWEET HOME:
Wednesday's match against Point Loma its the final installment of a four-match homestand for men's soccer. The Eagles are 2-0-1 at home in 2018 and have a long-standing history of success at Al Barbour Field. The Eagles have not had a losing record at home since 2001 and rattled off five wins in a six-match stretch a home in 2017 to guarantee a .500 record.

CONFERENCE TICKER:
Although the Eagles will not play matches that count toward their PacWest record this week, conference matches started in earnest on Monday and will continue through Saturday. Undefeated Fresno Pacific had its way with Academy of Art for its first conference win, scoring three first half goals to overwhelm the Urban Knights. The Sunbirds will play their second conference match on Thursday at Concordia while Azusa Pacific matches up with Chaminade in Hawaii. Following those matches, four more conference contests will be played before the Eagles travel to San Francisco to play in their first PacWest match.
