Northwest Nazarene heads West for matches against Biola and Point Loma this week and is still looking for its first win of the season. The Nighthawks surrender two goals per match on average but have been showing recent signs of improvement, just like Head Coach Todd Elkins' side. Northwest Nazarene held Fort Lewis College scoreless for final 81 minutes of their 1-1 tie on Sept. 6 and then jumped out to a first-half lead against Colorado Mesa University before losing 2-1. If Biola can repeat what it did against Cal State San Bernardino by taking the first-half lead, they may have a good chance to build on their advantage as NNU has surrendered five second-half goals this year. The Nighthawks were picked to finish fifth of seven teams in the GNAC preseason poll and return all-GNAC honorable mention midfielder Alex Mitrovic and leading scorer Jake Levine. The duo have just one goal between them through four matches.

Fort Hays State University plays the NNU schedule for the week in reverse, taking on No. 25 Point Loma on Thursday and then concluding their California trip with a match at Al Barbour Field. The Tigers concluded last week with a 3-1 record and were ranked No. 15 in the nation after defeating No. 3 Rockhurst on the road before losing 2-1 to No. 2 Midwestern State. Fort Hays State has posted four goals in two seperate matches already this season and is led by the tandem of Sergio Villalba and Santiago Agudelo, who have each scored three times. The Tigers won their conference a year ago with a 7-1-0 record and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 before losing to Northeastern State. It remains to be seen how they will do with the travel West, as FHSU went winless in two matches in the Pacific time zone a year ago and is 1-2-1 over the last two years.

ABOUT LAST WEEK:
Head Coach Todd Elkins' key to last week's win against Cal State San Bernardino was seeing his team score first. Freshman Oscar Rubalcava's goal midway through the first half gave Biola its first lead of the season and the Eagles' defense was evidently determined that it would not surrender that lead. Biola prohibited the Coyotes from taking a shot-on-goal during the final 42 minutes of the match and got some help up front with aggressive bursts from Leo Thompson and Atu Galadima to keep CSUSB at bay.

HOME SWEET HOME:
Biola will play its next three matches at Al Barbour Field, where it will hope to continue its long-standing history of success at home and create some momentum headed into conference play. The Eagles have not had a losing record at home since 2001 and rattled off five wins in a six-match stretch a home in 2017 to guarantee a .500 record.

CONFERENCE TICKER:
Biola is looking to follow Azusa Pacific and Dominican as teams that have collected multiple wins during non-conference play. The Cougars (now 3-0 at home; 3-1 overall) rattled off two wins at home this past week against Seattle Pacific and Western Washington, while Dominican obliterated an NAIA opponent by an 8-0 score before losing 3-0 to San Francisco State on Sunday. The surprise in the PacWest so far have been Concordia and Notre Dame De Namur, who have both lost three-straight after being picked to finish second and third, respectively, in the preseason conference poll. Concordia begins the week 0-3 with just one goal scored this season and NDNU is 1-3 with Cal State San Bernardino scheduled as its next opponent.
