MOMENT OF THE YEAR: Shannon's Shot

"The Blake Show" earns 59 percent of votes to win countdown.

July 23, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After two weeks and four rounds of matchups, "The Blake Show" was selected as the Biola Athletics Moment of the Year for the 2017-18 athletic season. The senior point guard's game-winning shot went toe-to-toe with Colton Worthington's postseason walk-off homerun in the finale and won with 59 percent of the nearly 750 votes cast.

At the beginning of the countdown there were 16 incredible moments to choose from, and it all came down to the one that sealed the win during the pinnacle athletic event of the 2017-18 season. The Eagles and Azusa Pacific Cougars had battled for 39+ plus minutes in front of a packed crowd of 2,400 onlookers and still had no clear winner with the score tied 70-70 with just a handful of seconds left.

Blake Shannon, Jr. had the ball at the top of the arc with one man, Petar Kutlesic, to beat. He took Kutlesic on, dribbling a step or two inside the arc before stepping back, setting his feet and throwing up his 12th and most important three-point attempt of the game. The shot went right through the twine and sent the Biola portion of Chase Gymnasium into a frenzy as the Eagles now held the lead with just one possession left to defend. A steal by Trevor Treinen iced the game for Biola and immediately etched Shannon's name into the history of the storied rivalry between Biola and APU.

That moment was always going to be hard to top, because of the number of eyewitnesses and the weight it carried on campus during this first year of the renewal of the Biola-APU rivalry. Throughout the countdown it earned over 1,000 total votes and more than 65 percent of possible votes in its matchups.

Thanks to all of you who participated by voting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and enjoyed reliving some of the wonderful memories created by our student-athletes in the 2017-18 school year. The 2018-19 season is just over a month away, as it opens when Biola Volleyball faces Dixie State on August 24.
