Sammy Dammann, Lawsen Honored

Two more Eagles earn Google Cloud Academic All-District honors.

June 01, 2018

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola University has a long history of pairing athletic and academic success, earning more than 50 Google Cloud Academic All-American honors and hundreds of Academic All-District nods.

This past week, two more Eagles added Google Cloud Academic All-District honors to their resumes as Sammy Dammann was recognized for the second consecutive year and Taylor Lawsen earned her first career honors.

Dammann was an Academic All-American last season while competing with Biola Swim & Dive in the NAIA. This year she becomes one of the select few to earn the All-District honors in a much more competitive NCAA Division II landscape. She was one of five swimmers (and five PacWest Conference student-athletes) to be recognized on the NCAA Division II District 8 All-District team in the at-large category.

The at-large category recognizes student-athletes from Women's Beach Volleyball, Women's Bowling, Women's Crew/Rowing, Men's and Women's Fencing, Women's Field Hockey, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Gymnastics, Men's and Women's Ice Hockey, Men's and Women's Lacrosse, Men's and Women's Rifle, Men's and Women's Skiing, Men's and Women's Swimming, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's Volleyball, Men's and Women's Water Polo and Men's Wrestling.

Dammann's senior season was highlighted with a strong performance at the PCSC Championship meet. She set new season-bests in all three individual events and helped the team to a very strong finish. She ends her Biola career with a 3.99 GPA as a journalism & integrated media major.

Lawsen earned her first academic honors by landing on the NCAA Division II District 8 team for cross country/track & field. The sophomore did not run as regularly during cross country season in the fall, but she logged a lot of miles for the Eagles in the spring, including competing in the 10,000m race at the PacWest Championships.

She earned the Academic All-District nod thanks to her outstanding academics, posting a perfect 4.00 as an English major.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-District and Academic All-America recognition student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or above.

Award winners are selected by a voting process that takes into account the academic standing of the student-athlete, as well as their athletic performance.

Academic All-District honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced in June by CoSIDA.
