Eagles Clinch NCCAA Postseason Berth

Biola’s offense mowed down Concordia is game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader to earn a 15-3 victory and a spot in the NCCAA West Regional.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola wasted little time in clinching a berth in NCCAA postseason Tuesday, cashing in on the scoreboard early and often in game one of the doubleheader against Concordia University Irvine to punch their ticket to the NCCAA West Regional on Saturday.

The Eagles collected 22 hits agit, just three of which went for extra-bases, and got a six-inning quality start from junior Troy Stainbrook to earn their 21st win in PacWest play. They will play for the chance to finish their regular season with 30 wins tomorrow when the two teams meet for the final game of the series.

Ricky Perez got the scoring started for Biola by stretching a groundout 90 additional feet to score from second base in the first inning. He and his teammates would subsequently add to their total in five of the next six innings to reach double figures in runs for the 12th time this season.

Andy Van Antwerp hit the only homerun of the game when he led off the second. Then Biola broke the game open with five runs in the third on four singles and a walk. After getting off to a torid 5-for-10 start between them in game one of the series, Colton Worthington and Ryan Gallegos each collecte RBI singles in the third and drove in four runs between them.

The duo went 7-for-11 in game one and are hitting .461 through the first three games of the series. But it was the underclassman that really signed in the first half of Tuesday's action, as the freshman Gallegos started the day 5-for-5 while the sophomore Van Antwerp drove in four runs all by himself.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team has now won six of Stainbrook's last eight starts after the left-hander surrendered just two runs to Concordia. Stainbrook only needed 24 pitches to get through the first two innings and struck out five in the contest.

He never allowed more than a single hit to the home team in any one frame and was followed by two relievers in Honus Kindreich and Anthony Villegas who only surrender two total hits over the last three innings.

Unfortunately, Biola ability to come up with hits in bunches left their high and dry for the majority of game two. After seven Eagles had multi-hit games in the 15-3 win, Biola was limited to five base hits as a team in game two and lost 6-3.

Two runs on two hits in the second inning made it seem like the offense was running on all cylinders and would put up another crooked number in game two. However, the home team responded with four runs between the third and fourth to pull ahead for good.

Josh Ludeman gets the loss after a rough third inning spoiled a great beginning with his first two frames. Phil Knapp tried to bring the Eagles close in the fifth when he singled and scored in the fifth to make it 4-3. But CUI pushed the game out of reach with two wins in their last at-bat to squash the chances of a comeback.

The single was Knapp's final at-bat of the day, but it continues a tear for the senior outfielder that has stretched back to April 19. The Huntington Beach, California native has at least one hit in nine of his last 10 ball games and has six RBI's over his last five games.

The NCCAA West Regional will be hosted at Biola on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast with Biola's customary live streaming coverage. More details about the Regional will be posted on the Biola Athletics home page as those details become available.
