Biola Concludes PacWest Schedule

The Eagles could not hold onto an early lead in their final PacWest game, losing 7-4 to Concordia.

IRVINE, Calif. --- The Eagles ended their first regular season in the PacWest on Wednesday with a little bit of a let down, seeing their 4-0 lead erased by Concordia University Irvine on the way to a 7-4 loss.

When all the action was completed on Wednesday, it turned out Biola was not affected negatively by the loss. The Eagles cliched their spot in the NCCAA postseason with Tuesday's win and have wrapped up a fourth-place finish in the PacWest after Dixie State lost to California Baptist on Wednesday.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team also got a number of good individual performances during the game, highlighted by a multi-hit, multi-RBI day from Tyler Piston and yet another scoreless outing from senior Daniel Jang.

Piston started the game on a good note by driving in Biola's first run in the first inning with an RBI single. He would add another RBI in the three-run third inning with Biola's second double of the frame. But Concordia began to chip away from there and eventually took control of the game.

It took time for Concordia to build its lead because of the start turned in by Eagles senior Micah Beyer. After struggling a bit in his last two starts, Beyer kicked off his outing on Wednesday with five strikeouts in two innings and only gave up two runs in four and two-thirds. He exited the game with 86 pitches as Biola begins its preparation for the upcoming NCCAA playoffs.

Outside of the perfect 1.1 innings pitched by Jang, the Eagles found things difficult on both sides of the ball over the last four-plus innings. Biola did not collect any hits after the third inning and saw Concordia score five runs between the sixth and seventh innings to pull ahead for good.

The appearance from Jang is worth examining, though, as the Eagles closer ended his stellar season with another shutdown appearance. Jang lowered his season ERA to 0.42 and registered a scoreless appearance of one inning or more against every conference opponent by shutting out Concordia. He also ended the season with 15-straight scoreless outings and struckout more batters (16) than he allowed hits (14) in his 19 appearances.

Biola returns home on Saturday to host University of Saint Katherine in the NCCAA West Regional at 1:00 p.m.
