Concordia Jumps Out First

Biola’s offense collected 12 hits and five runs but it could not close Concordia’s 4-0 first-inning lead.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola started its final PacWest series of the season on Monday, traveling south to take on Concordia University Irvine in the first of a four-game set.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team tagged Concordia's pitchers for 12 hits and five runs, then brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth. But the home team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and stayed one step ahead of the Biola for the rest of the game to wrap up a 8-5 victory.

Biola drops to 28-19, 20-17 PacWest while Concordia improves to 7-3 over its last 10 games. The Eagles only need one win over their last three games to meet qualification standards for the NCCAA postseason and would assure itself and fourth-place finish in the PacWest with two wins.

CUI only put two hits together in one innings twice during the contest. But both those innings came early and put the Eagles in a hole.

The home team loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning and proceeded to score four times in the first inning on a two-run error and two RBI singles. Starter Devin Sutorius stranded a total of five runners in his next three innings of work but was handed his first loss in his last four starts after he allowed two additional runs.

Biola brought the game close for the first time in the third inning, pushing across two runs on doubles from Phil Knapp and Colton Worthington.

Worthington lead his team in hits on Monday by putting together three hits in five at-bats. The senior captain now leads the Eagles with 17 multi-hit games this season and also scored his 49th run of the season in the contest.

With Ryan Gallegos chipping in two run-scoring hits of his own, Biola saw its three and four hitters go a combined 5-for-10 during the first game of the series. Gallegos hit RBI's singles in the fifth and ninth innings to raise his RBI total to 51. The Scotts Valley, California native became the third PacWest hitter, and the first freshman, to drive in more than 50 runs this season and drove in Jacob Portaro in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate.

Jerron Largusa would work a walk against new reliever Morgan Brannock to load the bases with two outs. But Brannock would strikeout the last batter to seal the three-run win for Concordia.

Despite the loss, the Eagles got another great relief performance in the middle innings from senior Jacob Battaglia. Battaglia held Concordia hitless and shutout opposing batters for three innings, striking out two over 43 pitches.

It was Battaglia's second scoreless outing in his last three appearances and the longest outing of his season thus far.

These two teams will return to Irvine on Tuesday for a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 noon.
