Sea Lions Roll

Biola loses on the road to a ranked opponent in Point Loma Nazarene University.

April 07, 2018

SAN DIEGO --- Point Loma Nazarene University rolled to its 16th victory of the season on Saturday with a 9-0 victory at home over Biola.

The Sea Lions came into the matched as the No. 28 ranked team in NCAA Division II and was looking to avenge a rare 8-1 loss at the hands of No. 16 UC San Diego.

They did just that with straight-set victories in singles play to clinch five points and the win against Biola. Led by No. 1 Carolina Cuevas, who is now 3-0 in the No.1 flight for PLNU, the Sea Lions collected straight-set in every singles matchup and just pushed through a close call at No. 2 singles to clinch the fifth point.

The Eagles' Tinisee Kandakai got the nod at No. 2 singles on Saturday pushed one of Point Loma's two ranked players into a tiebreak in the second set before falling just short of a third and decisive set. The result shows how well Kandakai has been playing lately, as the back-and-forth second set against No. 54 Shelby Groeneveld is a sizeable improvement upon her 6-2, 6-1 loss in singles to PLNU on Feb. 12.

Groeneveld and Michelle Torres would then lead the Sea Lions to three decisive doubles victory with their 8-1 win at the No. 1 matchup.

The Eagles have won at least one doubles flight in four of their last five matches at home, so a bounce back from Biola should be expected in their next match on April 13. The Eagles will host Ottawa (Ariz.) at the Biola Tennis Center with play beginning at 2:00 p.m.
