KANSAS CITY, Missouri --- Five years ago around this time Trevor Oaks was finishing up his freshman season for Head Coach John Verhoeven and the Biola Baseball team. Now, he's gearing up for his first start in Major League Baseball.
Oaks, a member of the Kansas City Royals organization, has been called up to make his first MLB start on Saturday when the Royals host the Chicago White Sox. Oaks will be on the bump for KC in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader for the two teams.
After completing his high school career at Woodcrest Christian High School in Riverside, Oaks spent his freshman year in the rotation for Verhoeven's Eagles in 2013. He then went on to play one year at California Baptist in 2014 before being drafted in June of that year. He becomes the third Biola Eagle to make a Major League Baseball roster, joining Biola Hall of Famers Todd Worrell and Tim Worrell.
In his one year with Biola, Oaks made 15 appearances, striking out 96 batters in just under 96 innings and holding opponents to a .267 batting average. He won four games and pitched five complete games. After his time at Biola he was a finalist for the Brett Tomko award while at CBU, which is awarded to the best pitcher in all of NCAA Division II.
Oaks spent his first four seasons of professional ball as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before being traded to the Kansas City Royals this January. The move to the Royals made it much more likely that Oaks would have his chance at a cup of coffee at some point in 2018, and finally that time has come.
Oaks was on campus at Biola just a few days after the trade to the Royals and threw some BP to the current Biola Baseball team and gave them some advice and insight about his career in professional baseball.
The trade to the Royals not only accelerated Oaks' path to the big leagues, but it also reunited him with a teammate from that 2013 Biola Baseball team, Josh Staumont.
Staumont, a La Habra native, also transferred from the program when Biola made its coaching change in 2014. He was drafted in the second round by the Royals and is currently in his fourth year in the KC organization, pitching for their AAA affiliate Omaha Storm Chasers.
This season in AAA, Oaks is holding batters to a .221 batting average against him and has a 3.09 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched. Staumont has made seven appearances out of the bullpen and has been stellar, striking out 17 in 8.2 innings pitched while posting an ERA of 1.04.
While the Worrell brothers pitched against each other as division rivals on the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres from 1993-97, no Biola pair has ever been on the same MLB team at the same time before. Perhaps this year is that opportunity with Oaks now there and Staumont knocking on the door.
Prior to this first opportunity in the show, Oaks put together some impressive numbers in the minors, competing primarily at the AAA level since 2016. Over his minor-league career, Oaks has a 32-15 record, 3.26 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 303 strikeouts. He had thrown three-consecutive quality starts in his last three outings for the Storm Chasers.
Oaks is currently ranked as the No. 13 prospect in the Royals' system. Staumont is ranked 11th.
The call to the MLB roster is as the 26th man allowed on a doubleheader day for the Royals. Keep an eye on their transactions log to see if Oaks will remain on the active roster after his start.
The game is scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. PT start. You can view the game on Fox Sports Kansas City as a part of any MLB viewing subscription.
