Walkoff Concludes Senior Day

Biola salvages a doubleheader split with No. 3 Azusa Pacific with a walkoff single from Jerron Largusa.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After losing the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with No. 3 Azusa Pacific 15-5, the Biola Eagles absolutely needed a win to maintain their standing in the PacWest conference.

In game two of the Eagles' senior day, starter Devin Sutorius and Daniel Jang limited the Cougars to just three runs and kept Biola within striking distance long enough for the offense to come from behind with three runs over the last two innings.

"It was a great day and we have a great group of seniors," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "We've been blessed with guys who have invested in the program and have helped build to where we are now. It was nice to shutdown APU offensively in the win when they were hot all weekend."

Sutorius only induced two swing-and-misses from Azusa Pacific hitters in his start, but he did not need the Cougars to chase a lot of pitches with the way he was pounding the zone. The junior left-hander registered 14 first-pitch strikes against the 22 batters he faced and induced 11 groundouts before being removed and ending up with a no decision.

He ended up not getting a decision because sophomore Andy Van Antwerp delivered a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning that swung momentum in the Eagles' favor. Following a leadoff single from Jerron Largusa against Tripp Aversa that brought the tying run to the plate, Van Antwerp hit a 2-1 fastball for a frozen rope down the left-field line that just scraped over the fence.

Biola naturally turned the ball over to senior Daniel Jang in seventh with the game knotted at 13-3. Jang came into the inning having recorded a scoreless appearance against every team Biola had played in conference play and quickly recorded the first two outs on just five pitches.

APU's Joseph Kim would get a two-out single to allow Joe Quire to face Jang. But the Brea, California native struck out Quire on three pitches to send the Eagles to the bottom of the seventh with the top of their order coming to the plate.

Senior shortstop Ricky Perez started off Biola's last at-bat with a leadoff single that pushed his personal hitting streak to a team-best 17 games. After Jacob Portaro walk, senior captain Colton Worthington was hit by a Declan Kearney fastball that loaded the bases with no outs.

Kearney would retire Ryan Gallegos for the first out of the inning but he fell behind Largusa 3-1 and was forced into a fastball count. Largusa smashed the 3-1 fastball into the right centerfield gap to plate Perez and flush his teammates out the dugout for the walkoff celebration. It was Largusa's second hit in as many at-bats and gave him an even 60 base knocks on the year.

Jang gets his first win of the year after pitching the seventh while Biola has now won each of the past three games Sutorius has started.

The win is Biola's 20th in PacWest play and leaves them with a record of 28-18, 20-16 PacWest. Azusa Pacific leaves Eagles Diamond having won the series, 3-1 and holds a one-game lead over Point Loma Nazarene University at 37-7, 27-7 PacWest.

The Eagles have their sights set on finishing in the top-five of the PacWest so they can meet the qualifying criteria for NCCAA postseason and still hold a one game lead on Academy of Art for fourth place with four games to play. Biola also holds a two game lead over Dixie State for fifth place after the Trailblazers and Urban Knights both split their doubleheaders on Saturday.

Biola looked to be on track to win the first game Saturday as well after four innings. Starter Troy Stainbrook got early results with a good fastball-slider combination and maintained a 1-0 lead over the Cougars through four innings.

APU scored three runs against him in the fifth to take their first lead of the game. But the Cougars really opened things up against Biola's relievers and scored 12 more runs over the final four innings to clinch the series win.

The only response the Eagles' mustered was a three-run homerun from Ryan Gallegos, who now pushes his team leading total for homeruns and RBI's to nine and 49, respectively.

Biola will get next week off for the players to focus on their final exams. Then they will conclude PacWest play with a four-game series at Concordia Irvine beginning on May 7 at 3:00 p.m.
