Cougars Take Game Two

Azusa Pacific dominates the middle innings of Friday’s game and runs away with a 18-2 victory.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The turning point of Friday afternoon's baseball game between No.3 Azusa Pacific and Biola was evident.

Although they were down 5-0, the Eagles had Cougars' starter Layne Henderson on the ropes in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and two runs already across. After a pitching visiting, senior catcher Tim Glenn stepped to the plate to face Henderson with two outs and jumped all over a first-pitch fastball to send a rocket destined for centerfield.

But Cougars' second baseman Joe Quire made a diving stab on the line drive, ending the inning for Henderson and and robbing the Eagles of two more runs to make a 5-4 game. Azusa Pacific then used the momentum created by that turning-point play to score six runs in their next at-bats and continued to pound their way to an 18-2 victory.

With wins in the first two games of the series, the Cougars are now 36-6, 26-6 PacWest while Biola falls to 27-17, 19-15 PacWest.

The 10 runs APU scored between the fourth and fifth innings seemed to come out of nowhere with the way Eagles' starter Micah Beyer was pitching through the first three innings. The senior collected six strikeouts and eight swing-and-misses as he got his first nine outs.

The one ball Beyer allowed to leave the infield in that opening stretch did hurt him, as Sean Aspinall hit a solo homerun to give APU the early lead. But it seemed like Biola had a good chance to crack Henderson as the tall righty had thrown 48 pitches through his first three innings of work

The Eagles did force Henderson to exit the ballgame after 4.1 innings. But the Azusa Pacific reliever shutdown Biola's bats for the second-straight day and prevented the hometeam from mounting any sort of comeback.

APU collected three doubles and two homeruns over the final five innings to push their score to 18 runs while Spiro Valasakos threw 4.2 perfect innings of relief to earn his first victory of the year.

These two teams will return to Eagles Diamond for a doubleheader on Saturday. It is also Biola's senior day, so senior celebrations will occur before first pitch and begin at approximately 11:30 a.m.
