Flash In The Pan

Biola jumps out to a 2-0 lead after the first innings but is stymied thereafter by Azusa Pacific.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The first two innings of Thursday's game against No. 3 Azusa Pacific gave no indication that the Biola offense would struggle. The Cougars had scored a run in the second inning on a homerun but Biola still held a lead after getting to APU ace Isaiah Carranza for two runs in the first inning and forced the visitors to turn to a freshman replacement at pitcher for the third inning.

But the Cougars kept tacking on runs and pitcher Brendan Dixon threw seven scoreless innings to collect his second win of the season in Azusa Pacific's 7-2 victory.

The win snaps as three-game losing streak for the Cougars and makes head coach Paul Svagdis the winningest coach in the history of APU's baseball program. Azusa Pacific is now 35-6, 25-6 PacWest while the Eagles drop to 27-15, 19-14 PacWest.

After surprise starter Josh Ludeman had a clean first inning, the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a no-doubt-about-it homerun from third baseman Jacob Portaro. Portaro punished an 0-1 fastball that Carranza left at the knees and over the plate over the left field fence for his sixth homerun of the year.

The Las Vegas, Nevada native has now scored a run and collected a hit in eight-straight games for the Eagles.

Following a throwing error that allowed Ryan Gallegos to reach, River Fawley added the second run of the first inning for Biola by hitting a single through the right side that plated Gallegos.

But the game quickly turned in the Cougars' favor as APU scored runs in four of the next five innings. Despite the fact that Biola pitchers limited APU slugger Pablo O'Connor to an 0-for-3 day at the three slot in the order, the Cougars seven and eight hitters both hit homeruns while the team as a whole worked nine walks.

Dixon restricted the Eagles to three hits over his seven innings of work and collected four strikeouts over 94 pitches.

These two teams will return to Eagles Diamond on Friday for the second game of the four-part series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace will be giving away 250 free sandwiches before the game.
