LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. --- Biola Women's Golf began play at its first PacWest Golf Championships on Monday afternoon and shot a 325 in their first go at the host site, Wigwam Golf Course.

The 325 has Biola tied for fifth in the field of nine teams through the first third of competition out in Litchfield Park. Biola is tied with Hawaii Pacific and sits behind Dixie State (318), Holy Names (308), Academy of Art (296) and the tournament leader and host, California Baptist (292).

The Eagles were led by Tori Roeske, who was maintaining a position inside of the individual top-10 for much of her first round, but recorded two higher scores within her final four holes of the day to end up with a round one tally of 80.

Roeske built her round with 12 pars, four bogeys and two doubles. She is tied for 17th overall after one day of play. All five Eagles scored between 80 and 84, with Roeske leading the way an Jules Loibl tallying the 84.

Loibl had a rough front nine with five bogeys and one triple, but played much better on the back, managing five pars over her final seven holes. She actually began her round with a birdie, one of six by Biola golfers on Monday.

Both Marcel Manalo and Sophia Karnazes had a team-high two birdies, and both of those freshmen managed to card round scores of +10 with 82s.

Manalo had a whirlwind finish to her front nine. She had two birdies, two bogeys and a par to shoot even-par over her final five holes on the front. That was a great stretch from her bouncing back from a double-bogey on the par-5 fourth hole. Her 39 was the second-lowest front nine score from any Eagle (Roeske - 38).

Like Manalo, both of Karnazes' birdies came on par-4s. She had one on the eighth hole and added another on the 17th hole as she seemed to have a hot streak on the penultimate holes of each half of the course.

Her birdie on the 17th was perfect timing, because she made up a stroke from her most disappointing hole of the day, a three-over six on hole number 16. That was one of two triple-bogeys from Biola golfers during day one of competition. You would expect both of those to be cleared up as the tournament rolls along, helping the Eagles shave some strokes.

Alexis Gopfert rounded out the Eagles' scorers with the second-best individual total on the team, an 81. That is Gopfert's best single-round score since she shot a 77 in round two at the NCCAA Championships in the fall and its two strokes better than her season average of 83.56. Gopfert built the round based off of solid scoring in par-4s and only once scoring anything higher than a bogey. She's near the top-10 players in the tournament in par-4 scoring after day one with an average total of 4.30 on the course's 10 par-4s.

The Eagles are within striking distance of a finish as high as third with two full rounds to play. Gopfert was the only player to shoot under her season average on Monday, leaving plenty of space for optimism for the rounds to come.

Also of note during Monday's first round - the tournament leader. Academy of Art's No. 1 player, Anahi Servin, carded a 64 to break the PacWest Conference scoring record. She shot 10 birdies on the afternoon.
