Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Seawolve Sweep

Biola beats Sonoma State for the second time this season to advance.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- With its season extended thanks to the PacWest Championships consolation bracket, Biola Men's Tennis had the chance to square off with familiar foe Sonoma State on Friday.

The Seawolves are an affiliate member of the conference in tennis, which setup the second matchup of the season between them and the Eagles. Biola won the opening match in thrilling fashion earlier this year at the Biola Tennis Center with Lucas Lee clinching a 5-4 win in the final singles match on the court.

Lee was also the one to clinch the win for Biola on this day under the shining sun at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center. After Biola swept doubles, Lee's singles match was the fifth to finish and it secured a 5-3 win for BU.

The win helps Biola advance to the final day of competition at the PacWest Championships as it will face Hawaii Pacific in the fifth-place game at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. That guarantees a sixth-place finish at worst for Head Coach David Goodman's team, which came into the tournament as the eighth seed.

Lee was not only a part of the clinching singles match, but he a Philip Westwood also combined to play in the most crucial of Biola's three doubles wins. The seniors worked an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles to ensure the three-match sweep in BU's favor.

Derek James and Quentin Lau had the most convincing doubles win, grabbing an 8-4 victory in the No. 2 matchup. Logan Blair and Joe Turnquist were the twosome that won the third doubles matchup by a score of 8-5.

After that it became like the wild, wild west in a singles battle filled with close matchups up and down the lineup. Biola suffered straight-set losses in the first two singles matches to finish as SSU began to tighten the game a bit with a 3-2 score on the scoreboard.

Lau continued his strong tournament run with another win at No. 6 singles (6-1; 6-4) to put Biola knocking on the door of victory with a 4-2 lead. Lau has won three of his four sets in singles to start off tournament play. He is, of course, also 1-1 now in doubles.

After Sonoma won another matchup to get their third victory of the day the senior Lee took it on his shoulders to end things early. Lee cruised to a 6-1 win in his opening set playing the No. 3 singles flight. Things were nowhere near as easy in the second set though as his opponent forced a tiebreaker to determine the frame. Lee won the tiebreaker 7-3 to advance Biola to the "championship" match of the consolation bracket.

The win makes Biola 7-14 on the season, while Sonoma State dropped to 13-7. Biola's first serve against HPU is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. It will be the final match of the year for Goodman's team.
