Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

A Laud Finish

A Quentin Lau win highlights first day of play at PacWest Championships.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- Biola Men's Tennis became the second sport at Biola to compete in a PacWest Conference Championship event on Thursday as it went head-to-head with No. 9 Hawaii Hilo during the PacWest Quarterfinals at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.

The Eagles join Biola's cross country teams as the only sports to go to PacWest postseason competition, they'll be joined by golf and track & field later this spring.

Biola was the tournament's No. 8 seed and had a tough time with the No. 1 seeded Vulcans. Hawaii Hilo won all three doubles matches and claimed the first two singles matches to come off the courts to wrap up the 5-0 win and move on to the semifinals.

The loss drops Biola to 6-14 overall and pushes them into the consolation bracket.

The two closest competitions of the day came at the two flights where Hawaii Hilo had nationally ranked competitors. The first such spot was at No. 1 doubles, where the Vulcans feature ITA's No. 21 ranked doubles pairing, Vaclav Slezak and Alessandro Giuliato.

Philip Westwood and Lucas Lee put up a whale of a fight in that position, keeping within one game early at 3-2 before ultimately falling 8-4 in the most tightly contested doubles match.

Westwood had the chance to encounter Slezak once again in the singles competition, where Slezak is ranked No. 28 in all of NCAA Division II. The fact that Slezak was ranked and came in with a 12-3 record at No. 1 singles did not intimidate Westwood one bit.

The Eagles' senior managed to take a lead in the first set at 6-5 before dropping the final two games to surrender the set. The two were locked in the middle of a back and forth second set too, when the match was called in favor of UHH, 5-0.

When the match was called Biola had one match into a third set as Quentin Lau answered a 6-2 set one loss with a 6-2 set two victory to end the day as the only Eagle with a set win in singles. Lau continued his impressive freshman season with this strong effort at the No. 6 spot. He now sports a .500 record in No. 6 singles and is 8-9 overall.

The Eagles have one more chance to stay alive in the consolation bracket as they face Sonoma State (who they beat 5-4 earlier this year) Friday at 1:30 p.m. Follow the match live at http://sidearmstats.com/pacwest/mten3/xlive.htm
