Back In Business

Biola earned its first conference sweep in over a month by beating NDNU.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Game two was very similar to the opener between Biola Softball and Notre Dame de Namur, with Biola walking away with a 7-2 win to complete the sweep.

The story was once again a dominant starting pitching performance matched by relentless offense when it was the Eagles' turn at bat. Biola score two runs in each of the first three innings to leap out to a 6-2 lead in support of Paige Austin and then put it in cruise control from there.

Austin earned her 14th win of the season by going six innings without allowing an earned run. The Argos did manage two runs in the top of the second, but both were the result of an uncharacteristic Eagles error.

Those two runs tied the game at two, but that was the closest things would be all game long as the Eagles continued to dig into NDNU's top starter, Delaney Pimplin. Noel Balderston began the Eagles' rally to take the lead back in the bottom of the third by reaching on an error. She would steal a base and later come around to score on a Kayla Neff single. Jay Perez, who reached by base on balls earlier in the inning scored Biola's second run of the second when Areana Ramos singled past a diving shortstop.

That would be all for the Eagles in the second, but they'd be back for more in the third inning after their lead-off batter, this time Karen Lieng, reached safely again. Lieng reached on a bunt single and eventually reached third by way of a wild pitch before scoring on an infield ground out. The sixth run came one batter later as a two-out double from Neff drove in Ruth Munoz and made it 6-2 BU.

With the added support, Austin just got better and better. She only allowed one hit over the course of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before handing the ball over to Paula Damas to finish off the game in the seventh.

Damas set down the Argos in order, getting three consecutive pop flies to end the game with Biola in front 7-2. The insurance run scored in the fifth courtesy a Neff sacrifice fly. Neff had five hits on the day, two in the nightcap, and drove in five runs as well, including a team-high three RBI in game two.

The win gives Biola its first PacWest Conference doubleheader sweep since March 9 and improves their overall record to 31-13 and total conference mark to 14-10. The Eagles' 14 wins is the fourth-most in the conference to this point. The Argos fall to 11-34 (7-17 PacWest).

It's tough sledding from here on out as all four of Biola's conference opponents have at least 10 wins in conference play. If the team plays like they did today, we should be in for some exciting games. Next up is a home doubleheader vs. No. 6 Dixie State (34-6, 18-6 PacWest) this coming Friday. The Eagles and Trailblazers split their doubleheader in Utah two weeks ago.
