Eagles Drop The Duel

Biola falls 3-1 to No. 13 Dixie State in game one of their doubleheader.

April 20, 2018

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a good, old-fashioned pitcher's duel at Freedom Field on Friday in the first game of Biola's doubleheader against No. 13 Dixie State. Unfortunately for the Eagles, it was DSU's freshman Cambrie Hazel who earned the win in the duel after the Trailblazers took a 3-1 win over BU.

Both teams opened with one run a piece in the first inning. That score held until the Trailblazers scored twice, one unearned, in their half of the fifth. Those two runs would end up being the deciding tallies in the game as Biola could not scratch out anything more against Hazel.

The game did hang in the balance in the Eagles' half of the seventh inning as a string of three consecutive freshman batters all reached to load the bases for Biola. Kylie Velasco and Ari Gonzales both earned pinch-hit singles and then Ruth Munoz worked a one-out walk to load the bases for the heart of BU's order.

Both Jay Perez and Kayla Neff managed hard-hit ground balls, but the DSU second baseman Kaitlyn Delange fielded both and got one out at home and another at second to end the inning and Biola's shot at a walk-off win.

The Eagles got another great start out of Terri Van Dagens, which is why its unfortunate she ended up with a tough-luck loss. She went all seven innings for the Eagles and held Dixie State to just five hits and two earned runs while issuing zero free passes. For perspective, DSU is an offense that's averaged eight runs-per-game this season.

Biola matched the Trailblazers' five hits and had even more base runners thanks to Hazel's four walks and two errors by the DSU defense. Unfortunately, Biola stranded eight runners on base and could only get one to touch the plate.

Selina Sherlin recorded her 12th multi-hit game of the season in the opener, going 2-for-2 and also reaching on a walk. She and Ruth Munoz were the only Eagles to reach multiple times in the contest.

The win helped Dixie State ensure at least a split of the season series, improving to 2-1 through the first three games of the four-game set. The two teams polish off the doubleheader at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
