Biola Completes PacWest Sweep

The Eagles score 19 runs across two games and hold off Holy Names to sweep the four-game series.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No matter the opponent or the circumstance, getting a sweep in a four-game series in extremely difficult for a collegiate baseball team. Winning four games in a row against a single opponent requires consistent hitting and a few good pitching performances at the right time to overcome any and every success an opponent comes across during the series.

The Biola Eagles were able to do just that for the first time as a PacWest member by winning both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to sweep the Hawks. It certainly was not easy, as the Hawks sustained their competitive play throughout the series and brought the tying run to the plate in the last inning of both games Saturday. But the Eagles eventually improved to 25-13 overall and 17-11 in PacWest play after 13-12 and 6-3 victories.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger's team benefited from two quality starts on the day to force the Hawks to play from behind. Lefty reliever turned starter Devin Sutorius set the tone for Biola's starting pitchers by allowing only two runs over six innings of work in game one and left the game with the Eagles up, 10-2.

It was Sutorius' longest outing of the year and resulted in first win as a starter, improving his record to 3-1.

The Eagles scored early and often in the first game of the twin bill to stake Sutorius to that lead. Four stolen bases in the first inning alone facilitated two runs without any run-scoring hits to give Biola the initial 2-0 lead. Then the home team charged ahead with four runs the very next inning to spell the end for Holy Names starter Garrett O'Callaghan.

River Fawley got the scoring started in the second inning with a solo shot for his fifth homerun of the season. Then Ryan Gallegos hit a two-run single five batters later to increase the Eagles' lead to 6-0.

Gallegos had an excellent series against the Hawks. He had at least one hit in all four games, collected seven RBI and took three walks on Saturday alone to raise his on-base percentage to .416.

Jacob Portaro punctuated the three runs Biola scored in the third inning with a two-run single of his own that gave him a line score of 3-for-3 with three RBI's and two stolen bases after three innings. He finished the day with four hits, four RBI's and three runs scored to push his batting average back over .300.

The Eagles responded to the three runs Holy Names scored in the seventh, after Sutorius had left the game, by scoring three runs of their own. But the Hawks made a hard charge in their last at-bats when the scored seven runs on a three-run homerun and four singles to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs.

Lefty Dallas Burk got the nod from Sullenger to put out the fire after the seventh run scored and got John Salda to hit a grounder back to the box on the first pitch he saw to end the game. It was Burk's first save of the season.

Biola had to wait until the third inning of game two to score the contest's first run. Portaro would deliver again with a double down the left field line to plate Brandon Cody and take the early lead.

For a while it seemed one run might be all starter Wyatt Haccou would need as he was rolling in the early going. Haccou recorded all six of his strikeouts during the first four innings of the game and allowed just two hits over that span.

The Eagles helped him out by adding two runs to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, which cushioned the blow when William Ruiz hit his second homerun of the series for the Hawks to make the score 3-2 in the sixth. But having sweep within reach motivated the Eagles to score three insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth to push the gap back to four runs.

Haccou would get one out in the seventh before Josh Ludeman finished off the game with a groundout and a strikeout. The 6.1 innings of work for Haccou was his longest outing in four weeks and resulted in his fourth win of the season.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning streak when they return to conference play next week. They'll welcome the visiting Dixie State Trailblazers to Eagles Diamond for a four-game series beginning April 19.
