A Rough Start

Biola loses game one of the series after Dixie State jumps out to an early lead.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The opening act of Biola's four-game set with the Dixie State Trailblazers did not go as the Eagles would have hoped.

The Trailblazers jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Eagles' ace after three innings and added three more runs over the final two innings to pull away for an 8-3 victory.

The loss snaps the Eagles' four-game winning streak and drops them to 25-14, 17-11 in PacWest. Dixie State improves to 15-14 in conference play and continues its recent tear by collecting its 13th win in its last 17 games.

Biola stayed within striking distance for the majority of the game thanks in large part to stellar individual performances from two freshman. With Biola down 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth innings, outfielder Ryan Gallegos drove in three runs by hitting his second homerun in the last seven days on a 1-1 pitch from starter Matt Mosca.

Gallegos' long ball to left field tied him with Colton Worthington for the team-lead in homeruns with six and made him the Eagles' top RBI-bat with 39 runs driven in. The Scotts Valley, California native was named Biola Athlete of the Week on Wednesday and has four extra-base hits and 10 RBI's over the Eagles' last five games.

Left-hander Christian Hammar was the other freshman who had his measure of success against the visiting team, holding the Trailblazers scoreless in his four innings of relief. Hammar replaced Micah Beyer to start the fourth inning and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings.

It was Hammar's second scoreless outing in his last three appearances. He allowed just three hits and countered five walks with five strikeouts.

Unfortunately, both of the Eagles' best performances made their impact after Dixie State had built its lead. The Trailblazers started the game with a leadoff double and then scored three runs in the first inning on one additional hit and three defensive miscues from Biola. DSU would tack on an additional run in the second and third inning and then added three insurance runs in its final two trips to the plate.

Mosca gets the win after five innings of work while right fielder Gabe Taylor set the table for the offense with three hits in five at-bats.

The Eagles have a great rebound opportunity on Friday with a doubleheader scheduled against the Trailblazers. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (PT).
