Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Senior Day Success

Biola wins 7-2 over Ottawa during its senior day at the BTC.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis closed out its regular season about as well as it could have on Friday afternoon as it worked a 7-2 victory over the visiting Ottawa Spirit in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.

The Eagles were celebrating four seniors on the day and all four got to celebrate at least one victory. The most flashy piece was the combination of Philip Westwood at Lucas Lee at No. 1 doubles. It was just the second time in the four years both have been on the team that they appeared together in a doubles match.

The two No. 1 singles players combined to make a force to be reckoned with and worked a convincing 8-4 victory after dropping the first game of their match while working out the kinks. The doubles victory gave Westwood 44 for his career and Lee 43. They are first and second in program history.

Biola won both of the other doubles matchups to get out to a quick start to the day. Senior Joe Turnquist combined with freshman Logan Blair at No. 2 doubles to get an 8-6 victory in the closest of all the doubles matchups.

Westwood (No. 1) and Lee (No. 3) both won their singles matches in straight sets to work their way to a perfect senior day. Westwood took down his opponent with set scores of 6-2 and 6-3 while Lee cruised to a 6-0; 6-1 showing.

Michael Vartuli is the fourth senior on this squad. He earned a chance to play at No. 6 singles and took full advantage of it. His matchup is the only one that did not finish in straight sets as he and his opponent played a super tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.

Vartuli lost the first set 6-1, won the second 6-4 and then took control in the tiebreaker with a 10-8 win. Biola got its fourth singles victory from Quentin Lau at the No. 5 flight. He earned his first victory at No. 5 this season after playing 14 of his 17 matches at No. 6. Lau won his match in straight sets (6-0; 6-0).

The victory brings Biola's regular season record to 6-13, while the Spirit (in their first season as an institution) compiled a regular season mark of 2-8 in countable contests.

Next up for BU is the PacWest Conference championships in Surprise, Arizona. The championships run from April 18 through April 21 and Biola is likely to be the seventh seed in the eight-team tournament. If today's standings hold the Eagles would be setup for a first-round matchup with Azusa Pacific.
