Victory Is Sweep

Biola tastes victory once again with two wins over William Woods at home.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's season of significance is back on track after a small hiccup last time out as the Eagles' softball team earned a sweep of William Woods on Tuesday night at Freedom Field.

Biola won game one 3-0 and then came from behind to win the second contest 6-4 in order to earn its first two victories over the Owls in program history.

The first game was a shutout twirled by Terri Van Dagens and Paige Austin with the Eagles scoring once in the first, once in the fourth and once in the fifth to earn a narrow victory.

The potential for more was there throughout the game too as Biola loaded the bases in each of the first two innings and had a runner reach third base (or further) in all but one inning.

Jay Perez was a big part of the Eagles' offensive success in game one. She reached base three times in the game, scoring twice and driving in another to be involved in each of the scoring plays.

Areana Ramos was involved in the first two, as she kept the hot bat going with a RBI single and RBI double to help lift the Eagles to their initial two-run lead. Both of her RBI hits came with two outs.

Van Dagens started the game and earned the win to improve to 7-1 on the season. He four scoreless innings of work got her season ERA back down to under one at 0.95, which is far and away the best among regular starting pitchers in the PacWest.

Austin finished the game with three innings of one-hit ball to earn her conference-leading fourth save of the season.

Game two was a bit more back-and-forth as both teams combined for 10 runs and 19 hits. The most significant plays of the ball game were not actually base hits, but rather fielding miscues. William Woods had three errors in the game, including a throwing error by the pitcher that brought home the two runs that won the game for the Eagles.

Biola strung together four hits and two sacrifice plays in the second inning to get out to a 2-0 advantage in the second game. Kylie Velasco knocked a RBI single through the left side of the infield and a sac fly by Perez brought home the second.

William Woods finally put some crooked numbers up on the board in the top of the third inning. They utilized a leadoff triple and a 2-out single to put two runs on the board and tie the game up.

Paula Damas entered the game in relief in the middle of that five-hit inning and came up big time with a strikeout to end the frame and strand the bases loaded for William Woods.

She would go on to pitch 2.1 very effective innings in relief to help bridge the gap to Austin who came in to end the game later on. Damas allowed six base runners, but she would only allow one run to come across the plate during her time in the circle. She's put up 10 innings of two-run relief work over her last three outings.

Austin did come into the game with one out in the fifth inning after WWU got runners to first and third with just one out in the inning. She got two strikes on the first batter she faced, but the hitter hit one off the handle of the bat to barely float over the head of Tori Apodaca at shortstop and allow William Woods to take its first lead of the day.

She struck out the side after that and ended up in position for the win when Biola scored two in the bottom half of the fifth thanks to a Jay Perez leadoff double starting a rally. Noel Balderston singled to push Perez across home plate and tie the game, and then a two-out throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score after a Hailey Boyett single.

William Woods wouldn't quit and managed to tie it back up in the top of the sixth, putting all of the pressure on the Biola offense in the bottom half. The Eagles were eager to claim the lead back so they could try to end the game in the top of the seventh, and they did just that.

After retiring the first two batters of the inning, the Owls' starter issued a walk to Andi Hormel and then she hit Perez and Balderston to load the bases for Areana Ramos. Ramos hit a grounder right back to the pitcher who had an easy throw to first to get out of trouble, but she threw the ball down the right field line and allowed two runs to score to give Biola a 6-4 lead.

Austin came back out in the seventh and struck out the side to earn her ninth win of the season. Seven of her eight outs recorded in the second game were via the strikeout.

Biola is now 19-5 on the season and is just one win away from tying their win total from the entirety of the 2017 season. They Owls drop to 7-7 after the doubleheader sweep and get to face Vanguard (20-2) on Thursday.

The Eagles jump back into conference play later this week with a home doubleheader against Dominican (6-14, 2-6 PWC) on Thursday night and a home doubleheader against Holy Names (1-9, 1-2 PWC) on Friday. Both series begin at 4:00 p.m.
