LA MIRADA, Calif. --- David Goodman has been in his second stint as the head coach of Biola's tennis programs for over two years and recently brought his father, Mark Goodman, on staff as an assistant coach.

Mark Goodman, known as "Coach Goody" to his players and fellow staff members, is an invaluable addition to the tennis program because of his optimism and knowledge of the sport. Coach Goody coached his son for most of his tennis career and Coach Goodman was excited by the possibility of utilizing his father's tennis knowledge in an official capacity.

"My dad has a ton of tennis knowledge; he's been around the game for over 30 years so he knows so much," said Goodman. "He's also been in college tennis for probably close to 20 years so he's seen everything you could possibly see. I think one of the traits that I look up to him with is his optimism. He's such a positive guy and he can bounce back from anything and he's always able to draw the positive out of difficult situations."

Players appreciate the positivity and passion that Coach Goody brings to their program as well. "Since Coach Goody began working with us, we have a fresh perspective of the game. Coach Goody has a love for the game that is definitely contagious on the practice courts and in the matches," said senior Lucas Lee.

While being coached by a father-son duo is definitely unique, the coaches' relationship isn't that different from the normal relationship that most coaches have. "Being completely honest, I forgot that they are a father and son because they do not act like it. The only reminder for me is that they drive together to work," said sophomore Allison Torres.

Regardless of the fact that they're related, Coach Goodman and Coach Goody are a powerful coaching team. Their attitudes play to each other's strengths and complement one another's coaching styles, and the Biola tennis program is blessed to have them as leaders.

"I personally really enjoy working with a father-son coaching duo," said Lee. "They have a chemistry that goes beyond the court and it shows in the way they work together in practice and in matches. Both of them have a similar passion for the sport and a knowledge of high level tennis. They know how to make quick adjustments in the middle of matches and have a good way of encouraging in difficult moments. They are different mainly in the way they encourage. Coach Goodman is definitely more intense while Coach Goody has a more calming presence out there."
