Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Five-Four Stinger

Biola gives it everything they've got but fall just short in 5-4 loss.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Things got emotional real fast at the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday morning as Biola Men's Tennis and Colorado Mesa could see early on that they'd be in for a long, competitive match.

The match came down to the absolute wire as the two teams split doubles and the first five singles matches an even 4-4 and set up an epic battle as No. 5 singles played through a third set with everyone on the court watching them and cheering every rally.

That match did not disappoint as the Eagles saw Logan Blair go down early before working to tie the set back at three games to three and was battling with the opponent at 30-30. The CMU player won that game and surged ahead 4-3. Then the Eagles' freshman fantastic dug deep and managed to pull out to a five games to four advantage that had BU on the verge of its first match win in nearly a month. Unfortunately, CMU's Venezuelan sophomore found a way to win the next two games and clinch the match for the Mavericks with a 7-5 third-set win.

The loss is Biola's first 4-5 result of the season. They've previously had two similar 6-3 losses, but nothing this close.

Some of the highlights of the match include an incredible turnaround from Derek James to earn a win at No. 2 singles. After the sophomore went down 1-0 after a frustrating 6-4 first set he bounced back and dominated sets two and three (6-3; 6-1) to win his match. In his closing set he had his serve doing the heavy lifting, ending two games via aces, including the very last point.

Lucas Lee and Quentin Lau also earned impressive singles victories. Lee took his opponent apart with a forceful 6-0; 6-2 win in the No. 3 spot and Lau avoided three sets by winning a close second set 7-5 after getting his first set 6-1.

Biola's lone doubles victory came at the No. 2 spot where Lau and Philip Westwood were in sync from start to finish, winning their match 8-2 after going up 5-0 just about 12 minutes into play.

The Eagles' hard-fought loss drops them to 2-8 on the season. They do not have much time to rest up as their next match is just two days away when they host Sonoma State at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
