LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second week in a row Biola has student-athletes among the National Christian College Athletic Association's national Players of the Week. Three members of the Eagles' track & field team were honored, to go along with Areana Ramos as the softball Player of the Week.
Biola swept the men and women's Track Athlete of the Week honors as
Stephanie Croy and
Gabe Plendcio each earned national honors. Both of those student-athletes are adding to honors they collected in the fall as they both were recognized at one point as the NCCAA Cross Country Runners of the Week.
Croy picked up the recognition by earning a victory in the 3,000m steeplechase at this weekend's Occidental Distance Carnival. Her time of 10:57 is the best time this season in the NCCAA (by 13 seconds), and she currently ranks second in all of NCAA Division II. The time would've been good enough for a DII provisional qualifying spot if Biola were postseason eligible.
Plendcio earned this week's recognition by finishing 35th in a field of over 250 runners in the men's 5k at the same distance carnival. He ran a career-best 15:00 to put himself with the 12th-best time in NCAA Division II this year. His time leads all current active NCCAA members.
Biola also earned the Women's Field Athlete of the Week award as
Anna Maumalanga had another fantastic week tossing the discus. The Eagles' standout freshman recorded a top mark of 41.95m, which was just about a fifth of a meter shy of her personal-best. She sits atop the NCCAA performance list by a margin of about five meters.
Finally, Ramos paced the Eagles' softball team to a 6-0 week with five multi-hit games and three homeruns. She hit a grand slam and drove in 13 runs this week to earn Biola its second NCCAA Softball Player of the Week honors of the season.
Track and Field continues its season this Saturday at the Point Loma Ross & Sharon Irwin Invitational. Softball is back at it at home on March 15 vs. Academy of Art.
