Clan Strike Back

Canada's NCAA team stole a win away from Biola and then left to Australia.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A doubleheader was scheduled to be played on Freedom Field on Tuesday afternoon against Simon Fraser, but the visiting team scheduled an early flight to Australia causing game two to be suspended in the middle and ultimately all record stricken.

The Clan came from behind in their final at-bats in the first game to earn an 8-7 victory and hand Biola its first defeat of the season. The game was tied 3-3 up until the fourth inning when back-to-back 2-RBI hits by Kayla Neff and Selina Sherlin blew it open for the Eagles to make it 7-3.

By that time Paige Austin was in the game and was cruising, allowing just three hits and no runs over the course of her first four innings of work. However, she approached 100 pitches in the seventh inning and began to have some control troubles.

After getting the leadoff runner to hit a weak groundout to second base, seven consecutive hitters reached base for the Clan before Austin managed to get the second and third outs consecutively to the ninth and 10th hitters of the inning.

That second out was also the play that resulted in the game-winning run as the bases were loaded and the batter hit a ball to the hole between shortstop and third base. Andi Hormel got to it with enough time to get the out at first base, but not enough to come home and SFU took the 8-7 lead.

Biola went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to seal the game in favor of the visitors.

Both teams ended with 11 hits in the game, but Biola outnumbered the Clan in errors, 3-1, resulting in two runs being scored unearned.

Ruth Munoz had a fantastic game as the designated player batting in the leadoff spot. The freshman was 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored. She also walked once to reach base all four times to the plate. She upped her season on-base percentage to a stellar .857.

Selina Sherlin, Areana Ramos and Haley Martinez also managed multi-hit games as Head Coach Lorie Coleman's offense continues to prove itself strong early in this season. As a team Biola is hitting .398 and averaging just over nine runs-per-game through the first three contests.

Biola falls to 2-1 with the upset loss, while SFU begins its campaign with a win. The Eagles' season continues on Friday as they play Menlo College and William Jessup at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at Big League Dreams West Covina.
