Biola Holds Off Hawks

Consistent scoring helps Biola overcome a strong effort from Holy Names.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Monday's matchup against Holy Names fit the bill of a trap game for the Biola Eagles. Coming off the heels of a momentous effort against No. 18 Azusa Pacific on  Saturday, the Eagles ran into a team on Monday that had played well of late and was primed for an upset.

The Eagles overcame 14 made three-pointers and three quarters with 20 points or more from Holy Names by getting consistent scoring throughout the game and rallying in the five minutes to win 79-74.

The win is Biola's 11th of the season and eighth in PacWest play. Holy Names falls to 4-19, 3-12 PacWest, despite playing well enough to win.

The Hawks actually scored more points than the Eagles during three quarters on Monday but were unable to makeup for their 13-point second quarter by pulling away in the other periods.

After Holy Names worked its way to a one-point lead after the first 10 minutes, the Eagles took advantage of their opponents lull in scoring and raced ahead to a double-figure lead late in the second quarter. Biola used great shooting from beyond the arc to score the first nine points of the period and 15 of the first 18 to take a 34-23 lead by the 5:39 mark.

The home team made six of its eight attempts from three-point land in the second quarter and led by as many as 12 with 2:19 left in the first half before Holy Names closed the gap to seven headed into the mid-game break.

The Eagles starting backcourt, Danielle Kennedy and DeMoria White, scored half of Biola's 40 points in quarters one and two and shot 56 percent from the field to finish with 17 and 25 points, respectively. Kennedy's 17 points and four rebounds are both season-highs for the junior shooting guard.

"Mori is like a coach on the floor [for us] and Danie had a good all-around game." said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "Brenna Khaw also gave us a nice spark off the bench, and Sara Dougan made some big extra effort plays at the end."

On the other side, lights out shooting from Elle Burland and Ariana Hernandez helped the Hawks surpass the Eagles halfway through the fourth quarter. But Dougan's eight points in the last 3:12 of the game and clutch threes from Kennedy and Khaw in the last five minutes prevented the Hawks from taking full control of the game.

The Eagles scored nine unanswered points in a 1:34 span during the last two minutes to continue their winning ways during the second half of their season.

"It was exciting to see us play so well in the last few minutes," said Nakamura. "As you saw tonight, the PacWest is a very tough conference throughout. We have rallied in the second half of the season, and have set ourselves up to play some very meaningful games the rest of the way. With the way our team is pulling together and preparing, I look for us to finish strong!"

The Eagles get a few days of well-earned rest before traveling to Riverside on Saturday for their next conference game. Biola tips off with California Baptist at 4:00 p.m.
