LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A school record fell and a whole lot of student-athletes got a taste of victory as Biola Track & Field began its 2018 season with a friendly home dual meet against old Golden State Athletic Conference rival, Westmont.

The Eagles won 22 of the 32 events on the schedule to run away with the meet. The highlight of the whole affair was freshman Anna Maumalanga's discus toss up at the recently refurbished throws facility.

Maumalanga won the event with a toss of 42.21m (138' 5.8"), which breaks the previous school record of 38.39m set by Megan Crumley back in 2016. The newcomer coupled a third-place finish in the shot put (11.52m) to make for a great first meet of her career.

The Eagles' women dominated the throws events, winning all three. Ambernicole Hollinger won the shot put (12.58m) and hammer throw (43.87m) to complete the trifecta for BU.

The most exciting event of the day was definitely the elimination mile that came near the end of the meet. Biola won both the men's and women's events with Robbie Gleeson coming from behind to overtake a Westmont runner to win the men's event and Hannah Hunsaker and Stephanie Croy dueling to the finish on the women's side.

Gabriel Igbokwe was one of several Biola student-athletes to win multiple events. The former soccer player turned jumper won the men's long jump with of distance of 5.94m and also got the triple jump, going 12.54m. Gleeson also won multiple events, adding the top spot in the 1,000m (2:36.65) to his mile win. Hunsaker accomplished the same feat in the same events, finishing the women's 1,000m in 3:03.31 to get the win.

The Biola men went 1-3 in the high jump, with Corry Williams leading the way by clearing 1.77m.

Hannah Hubbard joins Maumalanga and Igbokwe as standout first-year Eagles. The freshman from Lakewood won the women's long jump (5.21m) and triple jump (11.08m) by fairly wide margins.

The Biola women also dominated the sprint events, taking the top two spots in the 60m, the top three spots in the 300m and the top four spots in the 150m, in addition to winning the relay race that ended the day.

Paige LaBare was the biggest winner in that section of events. She won the 60m (7.95) and 150m (19.24) and was the anchor in the unique 4x371m relay event. She took the baton with an advantage of just a stride or two over the Westmont opponent and ended up opening up and winning the event for BU by almost five full seconds.

Sarah Prystupa earned Biola the win in the pole vault by clearing 3.35m (11'). Her winning mark was nearly two feet higher than second place.

The event was followed by a family and friends barbecue and banquet inside of the gym as a way to celebrate the start to a new year and new era of Biola Track & Field.

The Eagles are back in action for their first standard meet weekend next Saturday just down the freeway as they compete at the CSU Los Angeles Invitational held at Jesse Owens Track.
