The Bats Wake Up

Biola reawakens a somewhat dormant offense to gets two wins on a wet day in Oahu.

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i --- For a team like Biola that had scored 48 runs over a five-game span just two weeks ago, averaging just three runs a game last week felt like a bit of a downturn for the Eagles.

But Head Coach Jay Sullengers team smashed its ways to two wins and 17 runs on Monday to finish its trip to Hawai'i with a six-game stretch. The Eagles become the second PacWest team to reach nine wins on the year with a record of 9-3, 3-1 PacWest. The Hawai'i Pacific Sharks lose their first conference series of the year and fall to 7-5, 1-3 PacWest.

Biola did the bulk of its damage in the middle innings of both contests Monday but still had the honor of bringing the first run across in each game.

In game one, Jerron Largusa gave Biola a 1-0 first inning lead for the second time in three games with a single up the middle that scored Colton Worthington from second. Then Largusa would find his stroke again in the sixth with a two-run homer than ended up being the difference in the 7-5 final score.

Between those hits for Largusa, the Eagles benefitted from a great start from senior Wyatt Haccou and a four-run inning in the fourth.

Haccou went five innings and gave up two runs to get his second victory of the season. But Haccou's outing was incredibly pivotal for the Eagles because they needed the senior righty to preserve bullpen arms after he had tossed four innings earlier in the week. His five innings of effective work gave the offense enough time to get warmed up and allowed the relievers who followed him a four-run cushion to play with over the final four innings.

Biola created that breathing room in the fourth with a bases-clearing triple from Brandon Cody and a sacrifice fly from Joey Magro. Aggressiveness was the name of the game in the fourth inning for the Eagles, as Connor Kostecka's single was the only at-bat of the first five that went longer than two pitches. Both Cody and Magro made contact on the second pitch of their trip to the plate.

The Eagles finished up the game with a fireman's effort from closer Daniel Jang, who went the final 1.2 innings to record his fourth save of the season. Jang threw 34 pitches and only allowed two runners to reach base.

In game two, Biola's stretch of scoring in frames two through four put numbers on the scoreboard that would make pattern-lovers feel right at home: two in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.

The tandem of Ryan Gallegos and Jacob Portaro at six and seven in the order found themselves in the position to drive in runs time and again in the final game of the series. Each man collected three RBI's on two hits. Portaro is now up to four RBI's on the season, while Gallegos has been a pleasant surprise to everyone on the team and now the Eagles third-best total of nine ribbies.

The wet conditions on Oahu ushered in a breeding ground for fielding errors and wild pitches in the latter parts of the day.

Two errors in the fourth allowed Hawai'i Pacific to respond with three runs and make the game 9-5. But gritty relief appearances from Devin Sutorius and Josh Ludeman kept the game from getting out of Biola's hands. Then Daniel got the final two outs to seal his second save of the evening after the Sharks had made the score 10-6 and got the bases loaded.

The Eagles got 10 runs by scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth. Biola finished the day with a 10-9 victory and 23 hits and 12 walks between the two games.

Sullenger's squad will get about two days to recover before its begins a traditional four-game set with University of Hawai'i at Hilo. First pitch of the single game Thursday is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. (PT)
