Eagles Finish Sharp

Biola rebounds from a low scoring first quarter to defeat Chaminade, 66-61.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola fell behind the Chaminade Silverswords early in the game on Saturday and had to play catch-up well into the fourth quarter.

But clutch shooting from DeMoria White and team-wide success from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter ensured the Eagles would keep the lead once they got it with four minutes left in the game.

"It was exciting to see us improve every quarter, on both sides of the ball," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "Throughout the game we gradually improved our energy on defense, and our poise on offense. In the end we made just enough stops, and hit just enough shots and free throws, to finish on top. We were disappointed with our start, but we hung together. We never panicked and we never stopped competing."

With the 66-61 win over the Silverswords, the Eagles clinched at least a .500 conference record in their first season in the PacWest. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team will have a chance to finish 14-12, 11-9 PacWest when Dixie State comes to La Mirada for Biola's final game of the season on Thursday.

Chaminade burst out the gate in the first quarter to gain a 14-point lead. Substitute Alicia Dugan had 14 points on 4-of-4 shooting and outscored Biola all by herself in the first 10 minutes because the Eagles were limited to just eight points.

But the Eagles did a better job holding onto the ball to finish the first half and shot 50 percent on their eight attempts from beyond the arc in the second quarter to bring the game three points closer. Biola essentially founds its rhythm in the second quarter and maintained it for the rest of the game while the Silverswords began to tire after their impressive start.

The Eagles scored at least 19 points in each of the final three quarters while Chaminade was only able to manage 23 total points in the second half.

The Eagles got helpful scoring boosts in the first half from Tatum Brimley (five points) and Mikayla Greens (six). But Jazz Benn, Danielle Kennedy and DeMoria White carried most of the offensive burden for Biola in the final 20 minutes. Those three each scored over 10 points in the final two quarters alone combined for 36 of Biola's 39 second half points.

White led all scorers with 24 points while Benn finished one rebound shy of a double with 14 points and nine boards.

"Jazz played a complete game while Mikayla hit the boards and made an important 3 at the end of the 1st half," said Nakamura. "Danie and Mori really helped us get back in the game because they kept working to find open shots. And Tatum was efficient on offense, and a difference-maker on defense."

The Eagles finished the game by outscoring Chaminade 11-to-7 over the final 3:18 of the game. Biola went 2-for-2 from the field and 5-of-six on its free throws over that span to frustrate the Silverswords attempt to claw back in the game.

Biola will honor seniors DeMoria White and Khadidja Diakite during senior night festivities Thursday. Free Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, courtesy of Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace will be available before the game and tip-off with the Trailblazers is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
