Offense Explodes In Game 1 Win

Biola puts up nine runs to win by way of run rule vs. Franklin Pierce.

TUCSON, Ariz. ---- Biola Softball wasted no time getting warmed up out in Arizona as the Eagles began their stay at the 2018 Cactus Classic with a 9-1 run-rule victory over the Franklin Pierce Ravens.

Kaile Chavez got the start for Biola and went all five innings of the game to earn her first win of the 2018 season. Chavez got in some trouble in the top of the first inning with three walks and a hit-by-pitch resulting in an early lead for the Ravens, but then she settled in nicely and only gave up two more walks in the rest of her five innings of work.

The offense answered the call right away to tie the game at one in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles' production began with a Haley Martinez walk. She stole second base and eventually came around to score on a Franklin Pierce error.

That was it for the first inning, but Biola opened the floodgates in the second inning by putting up five runs. Each of the first five batters of the inning reached base and would eventually score as BU took full control of the contest. A Karen Lieng triple is what led to the most damage, as she drove in two runners and then crossed home plate on a wild pitch during the very next at-bat.

The score held steady through the third inning and top half of the fourth, but Biola manage to string together more production in the bottom of the fourth, just enough to put them in position to end the game via run rule with a clean fifth.

Noel Balderston, Selina Sherlin and Areana Ramos all scored with two outs in the fourth inning, with the freshman Balderston beginning the rally with a single to left field. The next three Eagles all got hits, including a two-RBI double from Ramos to blow the game wide open.

Ramos paced the Eagles' offense all day with two doubles, two runs and two RBI.

Chavez set the Ravens out in just 15 pitches in the fifth inning to seal the game and get Biola its fifth victory of the year. The Eagles improve to 5-3, while Franklin Pierce falls to 0-1 following its first outing of the season.

Biola continues play at the tournament with a game vs. Lubbock Christian (5-2) scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT. The game is running a bit late and will start closer to 1:30 p.m. Follow @BiolaAthletics for in-game updates.
