Eagles Scoring Comes Late

Biola comes from behind to win game one of a doubleheader but can’t repeat the feat in game two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles extended their winning streak to five games with a victory in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Bethesda Flames. But Flames starter Benjamin Lopez had Biola's number in game two and went a complete seven inning in a 2-1 loss for the Eagles.

Despite taking the early lead in both games, Bethesda was unable to restrain the Eagles from hitting their way back into game one.

After the Flames got to starter Troy Stainbrook for three runs on three hits in the second inning, the southpaw settled in and held the visiting team scoreless for the next five innings. Stainbrook delivered a quality start through his first seven innings, with 12 groundouts and three runs allowed on 87 pitches.

He would give up two more runs in the beginning of the eighth, but the Eagles had plenty of time by then to score six runs and take the lead.

Head Coach Jay Sullenger got ahead in the fourth inning by driving the ball out of the infield for four runs. The first three batters of the inning reached safely to set the table for a sacrifice fly from Ryan Gallegos. Then River Fawley delivered the dagger when Lopez was one out away from getting out of the inning with the lead.

Fawley smashed a three-run homerun to left on a 1-0 fastball to take the lead for Biola and get his first RBI's of the season.

Gallegos got his personal RBI total for the game to three as well in the next inning. The left fielder's single to left plated Joey Magro and Colton Worthington to put the Eagles in the driver's seat 6-3.

Anj Bourgeois gave the Eagles a pivotal insurance run with an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth and Daniel Jang collected five outs to get his first save of the season. It was a significant save for Jang, as it gives him sole possession of the career saves record at Biola with 19. Billy Vopinek previously set the record in 2009.

Unfortunately, the breaks wouldn't go Biola's way in the second game so the Eagles could complete the four game sweep.

Starter Dallas Burk pitched well enough to get through four innings without allowing a run. But Flames starter Benjamin Lopez just seemed to get a ground ball every time he needed one. Lopez and the Flames got double plays in the second, fourth and fifth innings to kills Eagle rallies and the Bethesda offense was able to make two runs from the fifth inning stand for the victory.

Lopez only surrendered two hits during the contest. Though the second hit definitely made the game more interesting as freshman Brandon Cody launched a fastball over the wall in left to cut Bethesda's lead in half.

Tyler Piston followed Cody with a hard smash to center. But outfielder Nathan Munoz was able to track the ball down in the deepest part of the park and record treh second out of the inning.

The Eagles travel to Poway, California for a final tuneup before beginning their PacWest schedule. Biola squares off with University of St. Katherine at 2:00 p.m.
