Micah Magnificent

Senior Micah Beyer was nearly unhittable in Biola’s 13-2 win over Bethesda.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Friday's start for Micah Beyer was one of those special occasions where he had everything working. For the first five innings it seemed his start might have even been historic, as Beyer went 15 up, 15 down while keeping his pitch count low enough to take a run at a perfect game.

His perfect game and shutout would end in the sixth inning, but Beyer kept trucking through his final three innings to finish with 14 strikeouts and carry the Eagles to a 13-2 victory over the Bethesda Flames.

"Expectations are high for Micah and I think he has those expectations for himself," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "He's our number one for a reason and he's a student of the game who's worked hard at the craft of pitching."

Beyer never threw more than five pitches during a single at-bat on Friday and only needed 86 pitches to get through his eight innings of work. He registered 21 first-pitch strikes and an incredible 24 swing-and-misses against Flames batters, coming mostly with his slider. Thirteen of Beyer's 14 strikeouts were recorded with his snapper.

Up until the fifth inning, the Eagles needed Beyer to be as sharp as he was. Ryan Gallegos' speed created runs in the second and fourth for the Eagles on a past ball and sacrifice fly before Colton Worthington made the score 5-0 on his second homerun this week.

Gallegos got on-base four times against the Flames and scored four runs while Worthington's three-run homer made him the first Eagle to reach 10 RBI's.

"Other than Colton's big homerun there weren't a lot of big fireworks," said Sullenger. "We took some good at-bats throughout the game and had a lot of base runners on. Guys like Ryan did a great job just getting on base. And that's what we preach here, having quality at-bats and getting on base, no matter what it looks like."

Biola broke things wide open against Flames relievers in the seventh and eighth innings with a total of eight runs. But when all was said and done, only one extra-base hit was involved in those eight runs: Jacob Poratro's double in the seventh that put him in position to score on a Tyler Piston sacrifice fly.

All of Biola's other runs in the seventh and eighth came on free bases or singles as the Eagles collected at least 11 hits for the fourth-straight game. Freshman Connor Kostecka got two of those hits and finished with a game-best three RBI's in the victory.

After Beyer's work was done, Honus Kindreich closed things out in the ninth with two strikeouts and a groundout on 11 pitches. The win is Biola's fourth in a row and maintains the Eagles momentum headed into Saturday's doubleheader with Bethesda.

First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
