Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Great Shooting Not Enough

Biola shoots better from the floor than it does from FT line in a loss.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball did all it could possibly do to force a close game in the final minutes against a Concordia Irvine team that's undefeated in conference play and came into the night riding a six-game winning streak.

In fact, a remarkable and unlikely, Levi Auble three-pointer as the shot clock expired tied the game at 60 with just 9:33 left on the clock, setting up a tantalizing final quarter of the game.

Unfortunately for Biola, Concordia got the jump, scoring the next six points after that three-point shot and never really allowed BU to get back where it could sniff a win, ultimately leading to a 84-78 CUI victory.

Biola would've had a chance late, but it could not do what Concordia did really, really well down the stretch run — make free throws.

The Eagles had nine free-throw opportunities over the final 10 minutes and made just two of them. Meanwhile, on the other end, Concordia made 14-of-17 from the line over that same final time span.

The quick six-point run on the other side of the Auble three-pointer set up CUI to maintain the lead until the final few minutes when Biola was forced to begin fouling, and then it was senior scorer Brian Chambers who really made Biola pay with his work from the stripe down the stretch.

Chambers would lead the CUI in scoring with 18 points. Twelve of his 18 came from the free-throw line, including a whopping eight-for-eight in the final minute of the ballgame. When he was not shooting free throws, Biola did a really good job neutralizing him, holding him to just 3-of-13 from the field.

Unfortunately for Biola, that difference of 12 points off free throws in the final 10 minutes helped CUI outscore BU 24-18 to earn its seventh victory in a row.

Michael Bagatourian was the game's leading scorer. The sophomore dropped 23, which is just one point shy of his career-best. It's his second 20+ point game and came on a very efficient 10-of-14 shooting performance. He played his most minutes of the season (36) as he continues to morph into a bigger and bigger part of what this team does offensively.

Trevor Treinen had 18 and Alex Talma had another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Talma also shot incredibly well, going 7-of-10 from the floor.

The whole team shot the ball well as the Eagles managed to shoot a season-best 57.7 percent from the field. The only problem was the season-worst 56.5 percent on free throws, while going to the line 20+ times.

Biola won the rebounding battle pretty handily, but Concordia was able to do more with the rebounds they got. CUI had 10 offensive rebounds (compared to BU's 9) and turned it into 18 second-chance points. Biola, on the other hand, had just seven second-chance points.

So, Biola will need to wait until next time to end Concordia's five-year winning streak over BU, but this was still a good showing despite the loss. The Eagles allowed a similar number of points to Concordia as Azusa Pacific did earlier in the week. The big difference is that APU lost by 20 points and Biola by just six.

Azusa Pacific is what's next on the schedule for BU, as the Eagles get the chance to host the major rivalry game this coming Saturday (Dec. 15) inside of Chase Gym.

It will be a big to-do like always, with over 1,000 red Beat Azusa shirts to give away, free In-n-Out for 800 fans (beginning at 6:30 p.m.), halftime contests and more.

An article with all the ticket specifics will be out on athletics.biola.edu later this week.
