Biola Spreads The Scoring Around

Five women scored in double figures for the Eagles on Saturday, as Biola’s balanced attack overwhelmed Holy Names, 82-53.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles picked up right where they left off after Thursday's 74-40 win over Notre Dame de Namur, bringing a balanced offensive attack to Saturday's win at home over the Holy Names Hawks.

Five Eagles scored in double figures for Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group in the 82-53 win. Danita Estorga and Mikayla Greens tied for the team lead with 14 points each, and Greens recorded her second double-double in four games while sinking every shot she took in the contest.

The win pushes the Eagles to .500 overall at 4-4 and keeps them perfect in PacWest play at 2-0. Holy Names falls to 0-2 in conference despite having three women score at least 10 points and having the games leading scorer in Ariana Hernandez (19).

Biola jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes and was up 17 at halftime thanks in large part to its ability to inhibit the Hawks leading scorer in Onjalise Carley-Hilliard. Carley-Hilliard came into the game averaging over 17 points per game but was limited to just three points in the first half and seven total for the game. Holy Names as a team struggled in the first quarter particularly, shooting 4-for-17 from the field while the home team made 10 of its 16 shooting attempts.

Every member of the starting five and two women off the bench scored for the Eagles in those first 10 minutes as Biola's roster continues to excel in scoring from top to bottom. Greens paced her team at halftime with nine points and five boards before pulling down nine more rebounds and making three additional shots in the final 20 minutes to finish with her 14-14 double-double.

Tatum Brimley and Brenna Khaw were the other members of the starting five to score in double figures, each accomplishing the feat for the second-straight game. Then two freshman came off the bench to pour in a few points of their own.

The performance of Biola's first-year players was definitely the leading tagline of Saturday's highlights. Both Estorga and Abigail Laberge reached double-digits with very efficient shooting, 7-for-10 for Estorga and 5-of-6 overall for Laberge as she drained both of her attempts from three.

Aysia Johnson checked in with five points and five assists in 14 minutes as the Eagles' second point guard, with forward Haley Gantt made the most her shooting chance in the fourth quarter by swishing a three.

Having so many options to score ended up making things very comfortable for the Eagles since they were able to create a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter that they would not relinquish. Biola outscored Holy Names in every quarter on its way to a 31.5 point average margin of victory in its first two conference games.

Biola will head to San Diego for its next PacWest tilt, taking on Point Loma at 5:30 p.m. on December 5.
