Eagles Drop Anchor on Argos

Biola’s four double-figure scorers were all the Eagles needed to defeat Notre Dame de Namur for their first PacWest win of the year.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Head Coach Alan Nakamura's Biola Eagles tipped off PacWest play with a loud bang on Thursday night, blowing out visiting Notre Dame de Namur 74-40 to start conference play 1-0.

Four Eagles scored in double figures as Biola did a great job distributing the ball for scoring opportunities while shooting 45 percent as a team. Point guard Tatum Brimley led the home team in scoring by collecting seven points in each half and forward Mikayla Greens took command around the key by pulling down 11 rebounds to help Biola finish with a plus-20 rebound advantage.

"After a challenging non-conference schedule the team was excited to tip-off PacWest play. It  showed in our Defensive and Rebounding energy, which then carried over to the Offensive end," said Nakamura. "We have a group of really high character, unselfish young people on our team and they did an excellent job of sharing the ball against a tough, disciplined NDNU team."

The Eagles went right at sharing the ball immediately after the opening tip. All five of Biola's starters chipped in points within the first four minutes of the game to build a 12-2 lead. Nakamura's group would limit Notre Dame de Namur to just 12 points in the first quarter as Biola pour in 22 to created a double-digit lead in would not relingquish over the final 30 minutes.

Biola made seven three-pointers, made by six players, in the first half of the game to take a 37-18 lead into halftime. That number of three surpassed the total the Eagles had in last week's loss to No. 20 Northwest Nazarene and included a trey from Brimley, who has made at least one three-pointer in all three of Biola's win this season.

After Jazz Benn paced her team with nine points in the first 20 minutes, Brimley, Brenna Khaw and Abigail Laberge took on the bulk of scoring in the second half. All four of those players finished with 10 points or more, marking a major accomplishment for Laberge particularly. The freshman from Quebec doubled her previous collegiate-best point total of five and set a new career-high in minutes with 20 just as Biola wants her to start playing her best in conference play.

The 46 points that group combined for was also enough to outscore at Argos' team that Biola play very tough defense against. Notre Dame de Namur made three shot-clock violations in the game and a backcourt violation as it totaled 40 points in the loss. That marked the lowest scoring total Biola had allowed to an opponent since the Eagles defeated La Sierra 66-36 on Nov. 10, 2015.

The Eagles will return to Chase Gym on Saturday to for another PacWest matchup, hosting Holy Names at 1 p.m.
